Dairy substitutes...

She was severely allergic to dairy (and, as often happens, she was addicted to milk) but he would not go out of his way to get her a decent substitute.

Why is that?? My daughter is the same way, she CRAVES what she is allergic to. Is that a mental thing because they know they shouldn't have it? Or is it the body associating that food with a certain necessity and therefore craves. For instance, pregnant women that crave soil. More times than not due to certain minerals that they are lacking, so the senses make the soil seem "tasty" for lack of a better word, lol. Speaking of dairy substitutes, can rice milk make one constipated? I ask because I used to use rice water on my kids when they were young to stop any diarrhea. Thanks...

Hi Blaze,

I read an "explanation" of cravings once that actually makes sense to me, although

I can't find the reference at the moment. (I think it was in one of the articles

on the "Living and Raw Foods" web page: http://www.living-foods.com/articles/ .)

Essentially the explanation was that when you eat something that the body doesn't

like, it resists it, kind of setting up an internal "battle". When the "opponent"

is missing then the body desires it because that is the only way to continue the

battle. It takes a while of the opponent being gone for the body to end the

battle.

That makes sense to me with some of the cravings I've experienced, and may make

sense to you regarding your diet and dairy. Don't know if it explains pregnant women

eating dirt though! LOL!!

Well I had three kids and for my first one I was craving fruits : she is the only one in the family who never liked meat of any kind and I am not a found of fruits never was, just when they are in season and not a lot of them. Trying to improve on this but they have to be prepared and cut into little pieces for me to enjoy them.

For my son I was craving ''Fritos'' this is funny because that is one thing that I was really not used to eat at all and after giving birth can't stand at all: my son is really a junk food addict and would eat anything that comes in a bag and doesn't require that you cook, bake or do anything else than opening a bag..LOL I am still not into chips of any kind and don't like anything salty at all.

The wierdest one is the last one, I was craving baby aspirin especially but aspirin in general would be fine. This perfect little thing has been having headackes (sp?) and migraines since she is 5 year old and is still having them. She also is having a stong tendency to alcoolism and drug dependency but she is very intelligent and she always fought this tendency on her own. But she is also the only one in the familly who is very carefull of her diet and healthy practice of any kind. As for me I never liked to take anything for anything..LOL I still can't take pills even if I need them for diabetes and HBP and pain.

My cravings are more for meat and those are really strong cravings, when I have them I have to get some NOW not a little bit later but NOW. Even more often and stonger in the last 5 years or since I've started to be really sick. And the only time in my life when I was feeling completely fine and full of energy was the times I was following the Atkins diet. I've been trying to change my diet slowly for the past few months but the cravings are stronger and stronger to the point of waking me up during the night. In a way it is ok since it doesn't make any trouble with my blood sugar level but the more I try to eat more veggies and fruits, the cravings are stronger and I feel hungry all the time now. I can make a relation with my diet as a kid, since meat was almost always reserved for my father and us kids would receive the same meal but with very little meat on our plate.

Hope this helps with your research,

Avec Amour,

Brigitte

VERY interesting Brigitte!!! Could it be that by eating the fruits and veggies, the body utilizes them faster and there is less waste and that is what contributes to the stronger cravings, or increased hunger? I notice the healthier the foods are I eat, the more often I want to eat. I have read that is good for you, but when you are raised to basically blame quantity instead of quality, it is kind of hard to break that pattern. I have all but wrecked my metabolism with such belief!! Thank you for pointing that out!! love...
