First question, the herbs you are taking, are they over the counter or the real thing? Is the garlic raw cloves or capsules? What does your diet consist of? Caffeine, dairy, sugar, soda, red meat etc... What is zicam?

There is an article in the files called Cold and Flu season.... take a look at it... it will answer alot... (then you'll have more questions)

It could be viral based instead of bacterial. Have you ever tried

Pau d'arco?

Hi! Welcome to the group! :)

Definitely look in the Files to the left and look under Doc

Shillington's folder and a few others. There are some neat recipes in

there, including Total Tonic and Total Nutrition and stuff. I'm

fixin' to try them myself, and almost everyone here takes them. Those

formulae cure practically anything.

I've had a couple of colds lately and what I've done so far is this:

at the first sign of a cold, I start pumping things like Echinacea

Tea (I prefer Yogi brand's Immune Support tea) and I put astragulus

tincture in there. I also take an echinacea tincture straight. Often,

I'll take this with cayenne, as it's a wonderful catalyst and has

many good properties of its own. You'll also want to do ginger, as it

settles the stomach, is great for digestion and assimilation, and it

has a bunch of different natural antibiotic compounds in it. I also

take elderberry in the form of Sambucol. I do a whole lot of Vitamin

C but I do this separately from the herbs. I have heard that Vit C is

too powerful, and it and the echineacea will cancel out each other's

effects. However, don't take that as gospel. I heard it from a good

chiropractor years ago but I've also heard they're fine combined, so

I'm not quite sure. I pump everything all day. :)

To break up congestion: my secret weapon is Bayberry tincture. I take

it in a tea or water. It's WONDERFUL for going in and breaking the

gunk up so you can get it out. It WILL NOT dry you up or decongest

you. That's a good thing, you don't want a decongestant anyway. The

congestion is simply your body's way of trying to get rid of bad

stuff and you don't want to hamper that. When your sinuses turn on

the waterworks, it's like it's trying to flush a toilet. (Don't take

that wrong, your body ain't a toilet, but you know what I mean. :) )

And that's not a process you want to stop! Instead, you want to HELP

your body do its job. It'll do it on its own, and very well, if you

let it. :) Bayberry does just that, it simply makes the phlegm more

movable so you can go a head and expell it. Keep the kleenex handy! :)

Another way to help your body rid itself of toxins (or whatever is

bringing on the cold) is to take a hot bath. I take a hot bath in

epsom salt (if that's not a good thing, anybody feel free to let me

know!) :) (Of course, I shower off afterward to wash off whatever I

just sweated out.)

Diet: I go liquid, or at least soft. I do lots of oatmeals (soak your

oats first, I'm told, and they're right!) and soups (always organic,

no MSG, no sodium, etc) and I add fresh diced raw organic veggies

like red pepper (high in Vitamin C), onion, garlic cloves (about a

bulb's worth), and lots of salt- and MSG-free spices like rosemary,

sage, thyme (all are GREAT for sore throats, congestion, etc), more

garlic powder, and a hint of cayenne. My soup has quite a bite to it

when I'm done adding stuff :) Oh--and add spirulina. It's an algae

that you can get in flake form at your health food store. Make sure

it says organic. By itself it tastes and smells like fish food but

when you add it to food (I add it to my soup), it loses that taste

and takes on whatever taste your food is. It has EXTREMELY high

vitamin, mineral, and protein content and is easy to digest. You can

assimilate those nutrients much more quickly. Keep the diet light,

stick mostly with fluids. You can put spirulina flakes in water,

juices, or other drinks, too. It will help you speed-heal. :) Hell,

it's got more useable protein than meat, more calcium than milk, and

more Beta carotene than a carrot! I drink TONS of water, in the form

of teas, or with tinctures in them, and don't forget just plain

water, too. Ideally it should be put through reverse osmosis or a

distiller.

Sleep--get plenty of. And then get some exercise, too. If you break a

sweat, be sure to shower well.

Other herbs to try: Eucalyptus, licorice (if you get laryngitis or a

really sore throat), fennel (if you get a sore throat), ephedra (IF

you can find it and you don't have high blood pressure. Use it in

small amounts, usually in a tea blend, to open up the airways, and

don't take it with any other stimulants.

Pineapple juice (100% pure!) is a natural decongestant, but I'm sort

of concerned about the (natural) sugars in it, does anyone have an

opinion?

Eliminate ALL: refined sugars, alcohol (except in tinctures), salt

(as much as you can!), tough-to-digest foods like meat, dairy, and

refined grains (especially like white rice and white bread--they're

very gummy and mucus-forming). The object of the game here is to

detoxify, ks that's what your body's trying to do and you're trying

to help by keeping your system clean.

Other things to try: get a chiropractic adjustment. I don't know

where I heard this, but chiropractic care can enhance your immune

system by about seven times. Have acupuncture done to open up your

airways. This can help open and stimulate the lungs, nose, etc and

really clear you up. Get sun, like maybe 30-60 mins, if you're in a

decent climate. The sun has the ability to help heal. Breathe steam,

especially eucalyptus or some other therapeutic essential oil. I'm

sure I'm forgetting stuff, but that's what I can think of for now :)

Hope that helps!

Glad to have you on the board :)

I am taking raw garlic, but am taking over the counter herbs.

No, caffeine, or suar, don't care for red meat.

Zicam is homeopathic cold remedy.(zincum glucconicum)

You can get it at drug stores, even target.

On the raw garlic... you can take up to 12 cloves in a days time... I would take along with the garlic, echinacea plus and total tonic (both in the files under Dr.Ian Shillington), drink lots of water and organic juices. This combo should knock it.

Anytime :))

Astralagus...the bottle's suggested dosage is the standard 30-45

drops or so. I never count...lol. I usually just stick in a

dropperful or 2 (a dropperful is, I THINK, roughly 30 drops, but ya

may wanna measure that out for yourself, as your dropper size may

vary?) I pick up the readymade tincture from Whole Foods, and it's

the Herb Pharm brand (so's my Bayberry, for that matter). Has a

darker golden, almost orange kinda label. Another good tincture brand

(if you're not yet up to making your tinctures at home) is Gaia

Herbs. That's a white and forest green label.

Fresh ginger is great! Good for you! I wish I could say I had some.

I'll probably pick some up. For now my capsules are OK but in many

cases, nothing beats fresh :)

Hadn't heard of putting in hydrogen peroxide...how well does that

work? How is it supposed to help?

I use capsules for cayenne, yeah. I get mine from Nature's Way,

they're standardized to contain a certain amount of capsicin per

serving or per capsule or something. They're pretty hot. I don't

taste them, they don't burn my mouth, but I do get a subtle little

burning in my tummy from them. I've heard cayenne DOES help

digestion, tho, and I've also heard it actually HELPS ulcers (anyone

plz feel free to correct me if I'm not right). Occasionally I get a

bit queasy from it but the ginger caps almost instantly do the trick.

The bayberry effect is sort of subtle. You'll have to be paying

attention to really feel it...but eventually, you'll suddenly realize

that you're getting more out of each attempt to blow your nose :) You

could take it in soup, too, if the taste bugs you. I've done that

before. One small word of caution: you don't want to go totally

hogwild on it. You don't wanna do the whole ounce as a shooter or

anything ;) Just steady in moderate amounts thruout the day is fine.

I've read that some with gastrointestinal probs or colitis might want

to use bayberry with caution, too. It didn't say ppl with those probs

shouldn't use it at all, just with caution. But if you don't have a

prob like this I wouldn't worry at all.

Yeah, this board rocks, doesn't it? You'll find a whole SLEW of

info here. And everybody's glad to help in any way we can. I think

you'll like it here. :)

Hehe hittin' the hay now. Get better! :)
