I would love to find a nice little storage container to separate/store

my bulk/powdered herbs.

I currently have them in the pantry in ziplocs and then into

shoe-box-size storage containers.

Is there a better way!??

Should they be in the freezer?

I have better luck with brown paper bags over plastic bags. Those

amber or blue colored jars are best, but are expensive.

Hi Alison,

Your hubby handy with wood and tools? If not okay. Best to keep your herbs out of direct sunlight and keep them in sealed containers. Yes, you can keep them in a freezer and they will have a longer life. Many people use Amber glass jars. Any color will work even clear as long as you keep them out of the sun. Paper bags, plastic bags what ever you can find to do the job.

If your hubby is handy have him build you a cabinet that has lots of little drawers in it so you can put one herb into one drawer. Then you can label each drawer. You got a hundred herbs you need a hundred drawers. You can have big ones and little ones. Just a thought and something I am planning on for meself sometime in the really near future when I can get handy. Right now I am learning to be handy without anything to be handy with. Kind of like a 150 years ago or so. Real challenge but not impossible.

What kind of earth (clay) is around you? Are you in a space where you

can do some " in the ground baking " of earth pots for your herbs?

Just a thought. - dolly

Ahhh,

I have many resources, being a rather resourceful fellow. Just don't have me a nice wooden cabinet full of drawers or 100 gallon sized wide mouthed amber bottles. Hehehehe As for clay, the only kind of dirt that grows over here is good for cement and that is probably about it. Limestone and lots of it. Not much else. Besides when I took ceramics in high school the teacher told me to go and throw a pot so I did. I didn't know she wasn't being literal. Guess I misunderstood the term "throw". Couldn't figure out why she kicked me out of her class. LOL

Only kidding,

Hi Alison.

Personally, I prefer glass storage for dried and powdered herbs..and there are 2 ways to go about getting them that are my favorite. Sometimes at parties, or at home, people drink..so, the nice glass bottles, I save, and use. Other option I prefer is the 99 cent stores. Many times on the ceramics aisle, you will find glass jars with cork stoppers in them, wide mouth variety to make storing and removing them easier. Sometimes I DO use plastic ziplock bags, and honestly, can't say that it does or does not affect the herbs in some way. I just try to stay away from plastic, at least I can sterilize glass. Just a coupld of options for ya....Love and Healing...

hello allison.. i hit garage sales. have a lot of the square apothecary type jars, some just clear glass with glass lids, some pressed glass with glass lids, some colored or clear with corks, some gallons, half gallons, quarts, pints.. even the little glass jars with lids that were candle jars are useful. also old ball canning jars with zinc/glass lids.

i have popcorn tins that i use for large amounts and put the herb in large zip-locks and sometimes store more than one item in the can. also have the large cans that used to be 'lard' cans. also have some of the jars that are used for canisters with the opening on one side.. like the old candy jars. use some antique wine or German beer bottles with the lids that have the metal thingie to hold the lid tight. most of them are in dark clear brown.

i use these for the tinctures. i have used plastic alcohol bottles that the ever clear came in for tinctures.

if the lid does not seal tight on dried material i cover it with plastic film before inserting the lid. of course most of these with glass lids are for dried material. trouble is finding shelves to hide them in!

hope this helos.

love, grany lee
