This brings up an interesting question my wife and I have had for a while. We are considering making our own capsules of various things. Our herbal shop sells the supplies. We were wondering if there are "rules of thumb" to use when making one's own capsules.

Can you make your own Valerian Capsules if you buy the Valerian fresh or dried?

by the time you get this, several people will probably have given you much better answers, but here is what i did:

i boutht a neat little thingie that has a bunch of holes in which you place half of the capsule then fill them up, tamp, and cap them. After a couple hundred of doing this, i threw the neat little thingie away, poured a bunch of the herb into a shallow bowl or lid, scraped the herb into the capsule by dragging it through the herb, tapping it in at the same time, then capping it. to me that is faster and not nearly as messy. one should wear surgical gloves and mask (for some) and i just take my stuff into the tv room, put news paper in lap and work away while watching tv!

rule of thumb?? yes.. pack it in with your thumb!!! hehehe!!!

I love your " rule of thumb granny " he-he-he. The simple, home

approaches usually win out.

John when I started working with herbs I used myself as the tester.

(As far as, I wonder if this will help my sinus congestion, headache,

etc.) I don't recommend this method to anyone, although I did learn

fast LOL. I didn't know where to find books etc at that time, but

oddly, I had easy access to a lot of herbs. (I found out the hard way

that some can cause you to vomit, ha-ha..the things we do when we are

young.) Anyway, how much to pack into a capsule, mixtures to pack and

what size capsule will be determined by you. Start with things you

know. I still find it easier to take my tea or tinctures - I still

have a lot of mucous in my body and this works best for me. I do

pack my own dried ginger root for travel purposes and a few others.

Have fun with it, and yes, I think granny's rule of thumb for packing

is best. I wear a cheap pair of lab goggles and latex gloves when I

pack because I don't want the cayenne dust bothering me. But just my

own opinion.

Hehe I, too, had a similar question concerning whether or not there

is an easier way to make capsules. I also had gone out and gotten

that little plastic tray thingie that had a bunch of holes in it, but

it seems to be more frustrating than it's worth. I think I'll try

your method, Granny Lee, and work away with a newspaper and a bowl of

herb (with mask & gloves, of course) in front of a movie or

something. :)

Cheers,

Thanks, Granny. Sounds like good advice. Should it be packed in or just as much as can be filled without packing tightly? I guess it would depend on the herb. We have no specific herb that we want to capsule, just want to learn to do it. Kind of an adventure, learning something new that will be beneficial to us.

I never would have considered using "safety equipment". Thanks for the responses!

well, John, i don't make a production of packing, just sort of a scoop-scoop-scoop, whop-whop, shake down, and cap!

when you do that, it is good and full, but also has the tiny round dome of the top in which to relax so it won't be too uptight! LOL!love.. ganny lee

PS.. about the only thing i encapsulate is ginger in case of trip, my system cleansing formula as it is very hot, and i need to do the Valerian if i can get close enough to it to do it.hehehe!!! i probably will be doing more after the next few weeks. have a bunch of stuff i need to tincture but need to get the alcohol.. live in a dry area!
