any substitute for ephedra?

Pseudoephedrene was overly abused in Australia years

ago and so therefore Ephedra and Ma Huang was no

longer able to be purchased because of this. We still

sell Sudafed here but only in packs of 30's (used to

have choice of 30's, 60's and 90's) and has to be

passed by the pharmacist before you can sell it over

the counter (it is under schedule 3 here or

pharmacists only medicine) and has to be out of

patient view. There are still many products with

pseudoephedrine in it and care with patients with high

blood pressure or other medical conditions have to be

taken into account before we can sell it over the

counter. I think it was also banned in the UK before

it did in Australia as I remember in 1992 I worked in

Pharmacy and there was a big hoo haa about it and the

banning here must have happened between 1998 and 2002

when I had a break from working in pharmacy.

I don't know of any substitutes but I know that some

chinese formulas still contain Ma Huang but I think

has to be purchased from overseas and cannot be

obtainable here.

For sinus problems there are definately a lot of other

products in herbal form that could do just as good or

a better job. I know there was a craze with weight

loss to help speed up the metabolism (quote me wrong)

but then again proper management of food and exercise

and the overall look of the patients picture could

find what the fault could be and treat it so that once

corrected the patient will lose weight...all my weight

loss patients are treated differently as each person

has a different problem.

My Aus 2 cents worth.

MessageI doubt they will ban Sudafed though. That one

has a " patent " .

Don I don't use the leaves as a vegetable, I use them as a condiment in the salad dressing. Not more than 3-4 young leaves for 4. Taste a bit like cucumber and is great that way. As for the tea I never take it more than once a week, like I told you before I also have a CNS that goes weird on me.. (just like today) and I am all crooked, face, body and walk like I am drunk. Brain is slow as well when I have those spells. Nobody can find what I have, so am very careful as to what I put in my body so I don't overstimulate anything..;-)

It is my understanding from what I can glean the the flowers of borage are very low in PA's. The leaves will have much more of the PA's and you may wish to use them only if you are trying to address your adrenal glands. Coures you can always use parsley root and parsley leaf to address your adrenals as well and they are much less prone to causing liver damage.

Change your salad greens to parsley, radiccio, lamb's lettuce, spinach, endive, cilantro, or other green leafy vegetables. Too much of the borage leaves will be just like eating too much comfrey. They both contain the PA's. (pyrrolizidine alkaloids).

Stool samples are a very good place to start. Many problems in the body can be attributed to parasites whether they are intestinal, liver, lung or wherever. They can create all kinds of problems that are usually "We really don't know why you are experiencing these problemsIt is all in your head". Everyone has parasites in them. They are symbiotic which means they need your body to live. You give them life they give you eventual death. Some trade off eh?? For someone whose immune system has been compromised severly these parasites can really get a good foothold and have loads of fun at your expense.

Talk with Doc he will be able to give you a much clearer picture about how to figure out or check out whether you have parasites or not. I am not trying to open a can of "worms here" pun intended but this could be a problem worth checking out and eliminating.

I am short on time so I haven't dug into the files, so I am sorry if

I don't totally answer your question...

Ephedra is traditionally used as a treatment for asthma, most likely

because it is a decongestant. If it is used in a cold/flu formula or

asthma formula my guess is it is because of the decongestant

properties. You can substitute an herb like thyme or garlic or

peppermint or any other decongestant.
