Guest guest
Doc, et al, Have any of you ever made synthetic laudanum, using lettuce? I have seen several people's opinions on the board, on the need for opium for pain, and it seems to me that the synthetic laudanum, like they made in WWI would work well. It is not hard to make, and it seems that it would work as a substitute. Thanks, Dennis
Guest guest
The Romans originally used Lettuces at the end of the meal for its sleep inducing properties. Laudanum being an extract of Lettuce stems. This practice was gradually abandoned and Lettuce became a hors d'oeuver which is how it is most often consumed today. Guest guest
OK, here goes: 1st plant a bunch of lettuce (I would use Lactuca Virosa Linn (wild lettuce), but I understand that any leafy will work, as will celery); when it makes heads or leaves, just ignore it & let it keep growing. Eventually you'll get a bunch of milkweed like stalks. When tiny yellow flowers form at the tops of these stalks, cut them up. While they're still fresh, cut the stalks into pieces & fill a quart jar with them. Pour in as much whiskey or other alcohol as you can fit, screw on the lid & let sit in a sunny location for a couple of weeks. Strain, reserving only the liquid. Take by tablespoon fulls; as needed for severe pain. During both WW s there were opium shortages & governments even made MORPHINE from lettuce.
