Guest guest
Hi Ken, Don't take this as gospel because I don't refer to myself as a scientist, but I've had enough courses to make me dangerous (he-he, only kidding.) There is a chemical in the root system and sparcely throughout walnut trees called Juglone. For you nerds out there it is a phenolic structure (remember the phenyl ring)whose chemical name is 5-hydroxy 1:4 napthoquinone. This is toxic to bark mulches - it contaminates them so is not used in bark mulches. My opinion, as a novice here, is that the growing green shell does not yet contain this substance, however, when the shell is mature it may take on the same properties as the walnut bark and therefore in maturity (black) it contains the chemical substance. Hence, it may be seen as hindering to a process by Dr. Clark. Just my .02 cents.
