Guest guest
I dont like castor oil as one reason it induces labor is that it stimulates the bowels and can cause bad pain. Also it can end up not inducing labor but just giving bad cramps/diarrhea. It also can make the labor quicker which isn't always a good thing. 5 days past the due date is WAYYYY too short of a time to me. My doc said that they usually start inducing if it's THREE WEEKS late Plus inducing can make worse labors Erin
Guest guest
My daughter was due on Friday, October 3. DOCTOR doesn't like anyone to go beyond 5 days past due date. Next appointment is tomorrow and if labor hasn't started doctor wants daughter to schedule an appointment to come into the hospital. I will go to the office appointment with her tomorrow to see if there is a MEDICAL REASON to induce labor. She had a difficult pregnancy earlier on - had to be fed intraveneously for a little over a month and then IV had to be removed because she got infected. Anyway, I recall an earlier thread regarding this very same subject. Doc recommended using a tablespoon of castor oil, and then another poster recommended taking red raspberry leaf tea. I'M, as her mother, leaning toward the castor oil. Doc or anyone could you please give me more information about using this. I thought it was used for a laxative, but I get the impression that this will move the same muscles to start contractions. Someone, anyone, please clarify this as quickly as possible. I'm getting nervous, because she might take the doctor's opinion just because he IS a doctor! If the baby is ready, would the contractions start shortly after taking this? I just need to make sure that we get to the " hospital " in time. Also, is there anything else we should be concerned with taking either of these two items? Thank you so much. Guest guest
This worked well for me. If the baby is ready to come it will most likely work. Also, when the medico starts to push his wares, just make the appointment for 2 weeks past the due date. It is also a good idea to have him sign the birth plan. -Shelby Yoki Hanley [selahs_soaps] Monday, October 06, 2003 7:59 PM herbal remedies Re: [herbal remedies] Doctor wants to induce labor - need immediate advice one way to make sure labor has a helping hand in getting started is by doing some light excercise. Just let your daughter do some walking. That will be one way to start without taking any thing internally. Another sure fire way, and this may sound corny to some but ti works, if her partner is willing engage in sexual intercourse. I am forgetting the hormones and all involved with that but I think they will be created as she comes to orgasm and that shoudl help to trigger her contractions. If these don't work then maybe you can begin something internally. But I know for me this has worked fairly quickly. Yoki --- nizoral2 <Nizoral2 wrote: > My daughter was due on Friday, October 3. Guest guest
A birth plan is a written statement, outline, or some form of direction that you want for your birth. It contains things like " Please do not offer pain medication. I will ask for them if I feel I need them. " Stuff like that. Mine had many things that the hospital would discourage routinely. I did not even know what a birth plan was until I went to a midwife. If you do not have a birth plan, I would STRONGLY recommend getting one ASAP. Especially if you are going to a hospital. Having the doctor sign the birth plan tells you and him that you expect him to follow it (make sure that he knows this). Remember, he's the hired help. I would also suggest having every nurse who attends you read & sign it as well. Make 4 copies of it. one in your hospital file, one in your birth bag, one taped on the door to the room & one just in case. Make sure you keep the signed copy in your possession. There are some online sites that can help you structure yours. I found them helpful. -Shelby P.S. If you are going to a hospital (it's not too late to change to a midwife), be prepared to do battle. You are your daughter's armor. I know it's late in the game but try to control your hospital situation as much as possible. Guest guest
Niz, I am just getting your post this morning... I've never used castor oil, so can't comment on that. But, besides the intercourse (the semen has the hormone relaxin in it that softens the uterus and others that may help start labor) she can also try constant nipple stimulation which releases the hormone oxytocin (natural form of the synthetic pitocin, which is safer than it's synthetic form) to get the labor started. If her honey doesn't want to do this, she can use a breast pump or her own fingers to manipulate the nipples. This is a really touchy situation especially if the mother isn't well informed. Medical induction leads to a whole bunch of c-sections. I've had three births so far, due again at the end of December, beginning of January...the first was induced and the second was rushed along with pitocin (that's the synthetic hormone most used in the US to bring about induction). I can tell you that if I have to skip town, I won't be induced again. Induction/use of pitocin is one of the big reasons I am choosing to stay home with this last one. I didn't have a section with either of mine, but I almost died from hemorrhaging the first time...really. Not trying to scare the wits out of you, but induction with Pitocin can cause hyper stimulation to the uterus (can cause rips or tears in the uterus) and that can cause stress on the baby and the baby's oxygen, that's why constant fetal monitoring will be used if she is induced. And, at the first sign of stress, most will cut the baby out. The only reason I know of to legitimately induce would be if the baby is in stress...if the baby's okay, I'd say leave it alone...no matter how tired the mama is of being pregnant. I know how it is, I been there. With my first, I was soooo tired of being pregnant I got upset that labor wasn't starting and my blood pressure went up, there by giving the medicos a legit reason for induction. Pitocin/medical induction also makes the contractions much harder all at once instead of building up slowly so that most mama's can handle them...right to the end. I know about this too, I was so afraid of the hospital with my last...I waited until the very last dying minute to go and the baby was crowned when I got to the hospital. That and the hospital in the town I was in refused to take me because I hadn't had any prenatal care with their doctors. But, the point is that I was still walking when I got to the hospital and was still co-herant until they demanded I get on the bed on my back to deliver the baby....then, my eyeballs began to roll with the pain...laying on your back puts pressure on the nerves, making it harder to endure for me. Anyhow, this is what I think about induction...unless absolutely necessary for the baby and mama and in that order, I wouldn't do it...and you can refuse. And, you gotta watch very closely what the doctors tell you, because half the time it's just opinion, not fact. Angel P.S. If she does a birth plan, someone that understands the mama needs to be there to back it up, that's not afraid of the medicos. Whether they sign it or not. Never, would I ignorantly try to tell you how to do your job, it's just been so long since I had a baby (and never at Duke's) I don't really know what all to expect. I also realize that you all don't know me, but I am trusting in you to allow me to birth this baby as absolutely naturally as possible. MonitoringI do not wish to have continuous fetal monitoring unless it is required by the condition of my baby.I do not want an internal monitor unless my baby has shown some sign of distress. Labor Augmentation/InductionI would like to try other methods I have learned about before any type of medical intervention, such as nipple stimulation, sexual intercourse, walking, etc. Anesthesia/Pain MedicationI am very afraid of all, as my mother is allergic to most and I've had bad experiences with Epidurals. Immediately After DeliveryI would like to cut the cord myself. It is very important to me that the umbilical cord stop pulsating before it is cut or clamped off.I would like to hold my baby while I deliver the placenta and any tissue repairs are made.I would prefer to hold my baby rather than have (him/her) placed under heat lamps.I do not want a routine injection of pitocin after the delivery to aid in expelling the placenta.I would like to delay the eye medication for my baby until a couple hours after birth.I intend to nurse to help the uterus contract. PostpartumUnless the baby's life or my life is at stake, I do not wish to be separated from my baby. BreastfeedingI plan to breastfeed my baby and would like to begin nursing immediately after birth.I do not wish to have any bottles given to my baby (including glucose water or plain water).I do not want my baby to be given a pacifier. Guest guest
Screw the Doctor!!! What's it gonna do? - Interfere with his golf game??? This is idiotic. Does he really think he can improve on Mother Nature??? The baby will come when the baby is ready to come. How does he know when the actual due date is anyway??? Usually Doctors go by what the woman says was her last menses, and sometimes (often) people make mistakes in this. And this doctor is going to induce labor on hearsay evidence only??? Sheesh, I'd fire the guy and go see a midwife. Labor should be induced if the water bag breaks and there is mercomium in the amniotic fluid. And even then, you have a 48 hour window that is still on the safe side. Also, labor should be induced IF there is actual evidence that the baby is large and is being stressed, or if the mother's health or life is in question. These are the only incidents that I can think of where labor should be induced. All other reasons are for the convenience of the Doctor which is absolute Bovine Excrement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
In my books, "intercourse" is very bad advice. I very strongly disagree with this as it can dramatically stress the baby. It can also physically damage the baby if not done very gently, with NO talking whatsoever!!! It is a well known fact that babys in the uterous record everything around them if only on a cellular level, and that this can and will create "Mental" difficulties in later years. A gentle dose of Castor Oil (1 to 2 tablespoons) or a dose of Intestinal Cleanse #1 may very well do the trick naturally. Furthermore, stimulation of the nipples may also help. The hubby has a responsibility here too. Might even be fun . But the intercourse is an absolute NO, NO! Guest guest
Excellent advice except for the intercourse. I love the "Birth Plan" and think every couple should do one. If it were my wife, and she was demanding sex (for whatever reason, whether hormonal or mental) I'd accommodate, but I'd be as gentle and as non physical (exercise wise) as possible, and there would be absolutely no verbalization whatsoever. Most women (not all, there are exceptions) have no interest in sex whatsoever when they get to this stage of their pregnancies, and I think a man would have to be a brute to force sex upon his wife if she had no interest at this time. The sanity of both the woman and the baby are at risk here, and this is what needs to be considered at this stage of the game. As I said, there are exceptions, and some women get unreasonably "horny" during this time, but this is not the norm. All women should be treated with the utmost respect and courtesy during this time, and couples should go out of their way not to argue. A husband should be extra considerate as it is a trying time for almost every woman. Afterall, a woman should be treated for what she is - The Beauty of Mankind. ) Love, Doc PS. And to me there is nothing more beautiful than a pregnant woman. Guest guest
No offense Doc but if the whole “no intercourse” thing won’t make the mom feel like nothing but an incubator then nothing will. Yes babies record everything but why is it whenever children are involved; mothers are thought of as nothing more then a means to an end. If it’s a big no no then why do midwifes recommend it. I have had 2 midwives. One was super “go natural” and the other one was more on the go natural but meds are not the devil kind of thing and both of them said go for the intercourse. If these don't work then maybe you can begin something internally. But I know for me this has worked fairly quickly. Yoki Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Guest guest
I also have to disagree with you. With my last one, Sex was at 10:30 pm & I woke up in labor at 1:30 am. It was just the push she needed. She was the best labor I ever had or heard of. She is also the healthiest, most well adjusted baby I know. It's also nice to have something that feels good to brighten the complete misery of that last month. -Shelby Dr. Ian Shillington [Dr.IanShillington]Tuesday, October 07, 2003 9:51 AMherbal remedies Subject: Re: [herbal remedies] Doctor wants to induce labor - need immediate advice In my books, "intercourse" is very bad advice. Justlet your daughter do some walking. That will be oneway to start without taking any thing internally.Another sure fire way, and this may sound corny tosome but ti works, if her partner is willing engage insexual intercourse. Guest guest
Wellllllllllll, I've known different Naturopaths to disagree with each other as well, and I personally know of at least one extremely excellent midwife who recommends no sex, so not all midwives see eye to eye on this. ;o) No one should ever try to make any woman feel "just like an incubator" just because she's pregnant. LOL I agree with you there to the point that it should be exactly the opposite and that every consideration should be given to the expectant MOM and that she should be treated extra special, but sex doesn't have to be an inclusive factor in this. It should be up to the woman with a lot of understanding from hubby. Guest guest
Well, I've been quiet thru all this.... however I have one thing to say here on the topic....I've had kittens, puppies, goat kids, baby chicks... AND NOT ONE OF THEM NEEDED A DOCTOR TO HELP GET THEM OUT ON A SCHEDULED TIME... THEY ALL CAME WHEN THEY WERE READY... AND IT WAS NOT ON THE SCHEDULED TIME FRAME THAT "SOCIETY" SAYS THEY SHOULD BE BORN ON/AT. SO WHO KNOWS MORE????? THE DOCTOR OR MOTHER NATURE?????? I'LL PUT MY MONEY ON MOTHER NATURE FIRST! I'M NOT SAYING THAT COMPLICATIONS DON'T HAPPEN BUT JUST BECAUSE A BABY ISN'T OUT ON WHAT THEY PERCEIVE TO BE THE EXACT DAY... WELL DUH. DID YOU EVER THINK THE KID ISN'T READY YET....SHEESH! ok I'm done now. Suzi John Ybarra <deuteronomy2929 wrote: You tell 'em, Doc!!
