Ear Candles...was....Ear Wax problem

Granny,

I get mine from the local HFS. They are hollow (paper, maybe?) coated with wax...

You light the big end, wait for smoke to come out through the little end and place the little UNLIT end into the ear. I also wrap a hand towel around the head, just to be safe, but nothing has every fell. And, hold the candle there, making sure the heat forms a suction...oh, shoot, there are real easy instructions on the package. You do have to lay on your side so the candle stays upright and keeps the suction going.

Anyhow, the burning candle forms a suction and pulls wax and other junk out of the ear. When it's done we always like to cut open what's left and inspect the junk inside that the candle caught.

They are about 3 or 4 dollars a pair at the HFS and usually only takes one pair, but we used three pair on my honey the first time we did this before nothing else came out...

Make sure that the ones you buy are not cracked or crushed and be careful taking them home or they won't work right.

Sometimes when doing Wayne's ears the tip of the candle gets clogged up...I just take a needle and open it back up...

[herbal remedies] Re: Ear Wax problem

well slap ME for being dumb.. but i have been hearing of candling for at least five years now and even one of my daughterinlaws is familiar with it but she is not where i can see it done. can any one tell me how it's done and what kind of candles are used???? i am pretty hard hearing and have had my ears cleaned with peroxide solution once by an MD's aid but they didn't get but just a flake or two from either ear. surely there would be more than a flake in an old 75 year old head!!! i'd like to try the candles if i knew how.love.. granny lee.

Interesting!!! I remember my parents doing that to me when I was... oh maybe 4 or 5 years old. When I got an earache they would light up and blow the smoke into my ears. Worked every time. They didn't use and funneling devices though. I'm not sure that cigarette smoke in the ears is a healthy thing but it sure cured my earaches. Now I wonder which of the 600 odd chemicals in tobacco was the culprit for curing them?????

Re: [herbal remedies] Ear Candles...was....Re: Ear Wax problem

As many of you know, some time ago, in my not-so-pretty past, I spend a couple of years in state prison. The limited medical access we had was frightening at best, criminal at worst. So we did a lot of self treatment for various ailments, including taking cloves of garlic as antibiotics. One of the things we did for earaches was to make a funnell out of paper and place in the ear. Someone who smokes would blow hot cig smoke into the funnell slowly, repeatedly, for a time, to draw out the earwax and ease the pain. It worked. Reminds me of these ear candles.
