Tips to Prioritize Reflection

Adapted from The Better World Handbook, by Ellis Jones et al (New

Society Publishers, 2007).

We rarely take time to reflect on our lives, yet reflection gives you

time to recognize what you've accomplished and really appreciate what

you experienced. It also provides an opportunity to grow, express

concerns, reconsider your priorities and record interesting and

creative ideas. Here are six tips to help you prioritize reflection:

SIMPLE SOLUTION:

* Keep a Journal: One of the best ways to reflect is by keeping a

journal. Write, draw, or paint whatever is on your mind.

* Step out of your comfort zone: While we're in our " safe zone " we

have little reason to really stretch into something new. Visit a

place you normally would be afraid to go, take a class in something

that you are nervous about, volunteer with a population that makes

you uneasy--whatever will push you into new ground.

* Examine your stereotypes: Accepting that we have stereotypes is

crucial to creating a more tolerant world, where people from diverse

backgrounds feel valued and safe. It is not easy to examine our

prejudices-- it forces us to face our dark side.

* Reconnect with nature: We are part of a living, breathing planet

that sustains our bodies and nourishes our spirits. Most of us feel a

need to connect with nature on some level.

* Reconsider your priorities: Make a list of your top priorities and

compare it to a list of how you spend your time. Consider focusing

your energies on your most important priorities to give them the

attention they deserve.

* Write a personal mission statement: If someone asked you what

exactly do you stand for, could you tell them? Writing your own

personal mission statement can be a powerful way for you to reflect

on who you are and who you'd like to be.
