Guest guest
My son's preschool wants him to be tested for ADD/ADHD. I was wondering if this is rather young for a child to be tested and medicated for this. I took online tests about my child's behavior and I was able to check off all but one for ADHD. My husband and I would like to use natural medications instead. So far, we have attempted to take dairy out of his diet, this is rather hard considering we live in WI, but we have made the best of it. The issue is that we have tried using soy milk, but my son won't drink it unless it is mixed half w/reg milk. Now, since dairy wasn't TOTALLY taken out of his diet, would the reduction of the dairy still have a behavior change on him, or not because it wasn't totally taken out? I was planning on upping his Omega- 3 as I know that this can cause ADD symptoms also. I did research online and saw a natural remedy for the symptoms off ADHD, but I don't know anything about it. If anyone has any information that would be useful in diet changes and natural remedies, please let me know. Thank you.
Guest guest
Call me crazy, but I don't believe ADD or ADHD exists. I was diagnosed with ADD when I was twelve, and do you know what the problem actually was? I was lazy. I was lazy and I had no discipline. I have never known another person who has been diagnosed with either of those diseases that didn't have some similar sort of self image based problem. As far as I know about the symptoms of ADHD (and this is a personal passion of mine, having been medicated with mind altering drugs for a disease that doesn't even exist in the past myself), every 4 year old on the planet has ADHD. What ever you do, do not treat him like he has some sort of strange disease. I hardly know anyone who has not been diagnosed with that, or some other " mental disorder " that strangely resembles a natural human emotion or something even more basic like dehydration. Also, DO NOT put him on any of those mind altering drugs, EVER! I suffered from such terrible depression for years after taking those. I even tried to kill myself once. If anything damages the brain, its those drugs. Do yourself a favor and check out the book Your Drug Might be Your Problem by Peter R. Breggin and David Cohen for a good starting point on these brain disorders they love to advertise so much now. Guest guest
I do think age 4 is pretty young. To make the diagnosis the symptoms need to have been present and of concern for 2-3 years. In my experience, if he is having half soy and half cow's milk he would not show a dramatic improvement if dairy is a problem. Have you tried different brands of soymilk? They vary a great deal in taste. Try adding a bit of vanilla and see if he will drink it then. You can also simply not have any other milks available - if he wants milk, he has to have soy. Or, he can have juice or water, etc. It would not hurt him to go without a milk substitute if he doesn't like soymilk. Almond milk or rice milk may also be good alternatives if he is not sensitive to those. Guest guest
Homeopathic medicine works very well in hyperactive conditions. Here are a couple of testimonials from clients, one an adult with ADD and one from the mother of a child who was diagnosed with ADHD: " I have found that Cathleen's work with me has helped me find my center again; has helped me calm my body back down and bear up under the things I am facing. " Gwynn Santa Rosa, CA " When my pediatrician prescribed Ritalin for my 3½ year old son, I decided to seek homeopathic treatment for him with Cathleen Springer. In just a few appointments, and with a remedy that treats ADHD, my son was no longer hyperactive. He was once again acting like any other child his age. " Marieke R., Rohnert Park, CA I strongly recommend that you locate a professional homeopath in your area. I feel certain that your son's little body would benefit greatly from this safe, non-toxic treatment. Guest guest
My son has autism and was also diagnosed with adhd (but is no longer hyper). Most of these kids do have lots of different sensitivities to foods. Instead of taking out dairy, consider getting an IGG test. It's a blood test that test for food sensitivities (not true allergies). Some sensitivites can cause things like hyperness, headaches, and brain fog. A good lab to get this done is Great Plains Lab. There test, test for around 100 different food items. I found my son can have dairy (which is rare for a kid like him), but many other things would make him act up such as bannanas, soy, sugar and peanuts. Also, cod liver oil is good, but it takes a while to see a difference. I think it took my son a couple months, but it was worth it. Buy a good quality kind that is not contaminated with mercury. Carlson's brand and Nordic Naturals test for purity. Also, do a search for Doris Rapp. She has books on this subject and has been on shows such as Oprah discussing ADHD and belives is sensitivities is the cause of this and she's reversed many kids diagnosis drug free just by diet. , " sknoll1318 " <sweetbutterfly1318 wrote: > > My son's preschool wants him to be tested for ADD/ADHD. Guest guest
With regard to soy milk and the ADD/ADHD child, soy milk was one of my son's allergy foods, which made his symptoms worse. You might want to try the rice milk or nut milks as was suggested below, or even raw organic goat's milk if you can get it (by the time our son was 7, we opted to get a couple of dairy goats for the family!). I think the rice milks, especially the vanilla (Rice Dream brand) is the nicest tasting. Cheers Andrea NZ On 9/04/2007, at 3:07 PM, Carol Ann Rowland wrote: > I do think age 4 is pretty young. Guest guest
Yes, Jessi, that's another potential piece of the puzzle. With homeopathic medicine there must be other signs and symptoms that would suggest CNS hyperactivity; eg, tendancy for cruelty to animals, preoccupation with knives, constant need for rhythmic tapping or moving the hands, history of birth trauma, etc. Just because a 4-year-old is full of energy or easily distractible does not mean this child is ADD. Good point. Guest guest
Hurrah, another parent who won't just go for drugs! You can find a series of articles on ADD in the files of the group. Go to the home of this group, and you will see a bunch of folders. One is marked ADD. To the attention of Jessica Stone: The first topic is: " Does ADD exist? " You can also check the messages for older threads on the subject. I became interested in ADD after my son, who was my " difficult child " was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 19. He had a teacher who noticed he was brilliant but couldn't quite get it all out on paper. Ironically this was AFTER we had found a whole food supplement that improved him immensely. Just to be honest from the start: the product that was so helpful to us came into our lives through a friend, and after a year of using it I ended up selling it. So if that is against your principles you can stop reading now. You can e-mail me off list for the whole story. ienvan Dairy may be a factor, but so is sugar and most of all those ever-present food additives. Many kids who are allergic to dairy also have a hard time with soy. Different foods are a trigger for different kids. Wheat or other grains with gluten can be a big one too. Many kids improve with fish oils, but for other kids the missing factor is freely available amino acids, or balanced B vitamins, or minerals and trace minerals. The nice thing about AFA, our miracle stuff, is that it has all of the above, and there is a really nice, affordable starter package that has enzymes and probiotics as well. Most ADD kids really benefit from those. Ien in the Kootenays http://freegreenliving.com (me) http://wildwholefoods.net (the stuff)
Guest guest
I agree with you Chris. I was diagnosed at age 16 with MBD...the predecessor for ADD/ADHD. I was failing in school, had no social skills, couldn't concentrate, couldn't sit still and no I was not lazy. The first day I was on Ritalin, my special education teacher asks me when I'm going to go to my next class. I had been reading a book at the time. I told him it wasn't time to go and he corrected me telling me I had been sitting still for over 2 hours! I was shocked! I had never in my life been able to do that. My grades went up, my social life improved, I was able to attend regular high school classes and hold down 2 part time jobs. For the first time in my life math made sense. My mom quickly put my whole family on the feingold diet and was able to control the ADD/ADHD in all 4 siblings and my father. I am now the mother of 5 + 3 more and 6 of those 8 are ADD/ADHD or Autistic. Guess what we discovered? That diet does benefit and help to control the symptoms. We don't medicate as we don't believe in pharmaceuticals, but we do use herbals and diet, and it works. Along with regular EEG/ECG sessions on the SCIO. I firmly believe that too many kids are being driven down this route, which is sad because the ones who really do need it get overlooked. Guest guest
ADHD is a real problem for some people, even though the label is widely misdiagnosed and misapplied on many people who do not have it. My 6 yo daughter has met criteria for ADHD since age 3, and it truly interferes with her functioning, both in impulse control and distractability. She runs around a room like an out of control tornado. (This, btw, is anything but lazy.) It turns out, however, that what she really has is Sensory Processing Disorder (search for the book The Out-Of-Sync Child). After several months of occupational therapy, she has calmed down quite a bit. I am going to follow up the remaining symptoms with homeopathy. I have heard of wonderful results too from the Feingold Diet. All that to say, just because people meet the criteria for the diagnosis, doesn't mean that the diagnosis is the best fit or suggests the best treatment for everyone. Most diagnosticians don't go through the trouble of ruling out other conditions and slap on ADHD too easily. That said, there are many people who do not believe the problematic behaviors described in ADHD constitute a " disorder. " They prefer to see the constellation of behaviors and choices as a valid difference in personality and " spiritedness. " I respect this viewpoint as well. Guest guest
The only difference I noticed on my medication was depression and lack of appetite. It was the thinnest I ever was, I did kind of like that result. My mother said that I was paying attention much better, and continued to say it months after I had stopped taking my medicine without telling her. The only thing that made my " ADD " better was joining the Army and learning about discipline. christine DeMey <cdemey wrote: Well, with all due respect I " totally " disagree with you, I had lived many years with A.D.D. People who have benefitted from one approach may now be convinced that they have the answer. Since nutrition is my great passion I tend to look at that first. But I have a friend who is a self-taught expert in Learning Disabilities. She tends to look at that first. Is the child not learning because he is hyper, or is he hyper because he is not learning? Guest guest
Oh, I want to add that I'm not saying all children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are just lazy, that was just my problem. I'm just saying that its usually some sort of habitual or behavioral problem, not a mental disorder. For example, I know its a crazy idea, but some people believe that different children learn in different ways. I know, its out there. But imagine how a child who learns in a different manner might react to our education system that expects all children to conform to one standard of learning. Might it resemble what we call ADD? Or perhaps a child could be too advanced for its subjects. Stranger things than children skipping grades has been known to happen. Or what if a child is suffering from self confidence issues because there is a bully picking on them, or something like that? After Columbine I think its become painfully obvious how much most teachers interfear with those types of situations. There are a million things that could be wrong, all of them normal reactions to surrounding situations or simple personality traits. I get tired of seeing our society try to medicate away personality traits. First we were too depressed, so they gave us anti depressants. Then we were too happy, so they started giving us meds for manic depressive disorder. We're too tired, so they give us meds for chronic fatigue (and has anyone noticed that the symptoms of chronic fatigue disorder are exactly the same as they symptoms for dehydration? Strange indeed). Our children are too active, put them on ritalin. Oh no, now we have a childhood obesity epidemic, put them on diet pills. Give me a break. How long did the human species survive without any of this? private <mailacc wrote: Don't be too quick to accept labels like ADD & ADHD, for your children. Guest guest
A couple or so thoughts - He could be bored there if they aren't keeping his attention, are teaching/doing things he already knows. Also with foods - many times a food dye can cause problems with behavior. You may look at some of what he's eating and drinking to see if this is something you might try (remove the food/drink). For instance red dye #40, some yellow dye and I assume there are others can have kids react. They might not be allergic to them, just sensitive. Do a google search for something like " food dye and behavior " or " food coloring... " and some things should turn up you can read about. Quick thoughts! Guest guest
-ADD/ADHD is one of those diagnosis that can be so controversial. I believe (not for certain to be true just my experience) that people experience these in various degree's I know of atleast one person who had it so severe he could barely complete day to day tasks. His memory was so poor it impacted his ability to maintain jobs. Some may have a milder case who with a few tricks can manage with out medications or can channel it in a positive way.(any one who watches home make over on Sundays Tye doesn't get that passion from too much coffee! he has talked about his hyperactivity so I'm not diagnosing). I have found relief with medications, I haven't gone the amphetamine route but ssri route. I went off for a few years during the birth of my son and nursing etc and during this time I realized what a difference it did make. I tried to stay off it because of stigma of being medicated and tried to believe my way out of having add. When I started feeling the impact on day to day tasks becoming overwhelming and organization and attention to detail being a big part of my job it was a struggle. I tried to treat it with diet and exercise and making my own teas and herbal treatments. I finally made the decision to go back on medication and with in a month I realized I would probably have to take medications for the rest of my life or atleast until I retire!! and try not to be down on my self for taking medication. I would prefer not to but at this time I havent' found an herb that maintains at a steady level. Stacy -- In , Jenny Kernan <rainysnana wrote: > > I agree with you Chris. Guest guest
Two excellent books to read and learn: Driven to Distraction, is written by 2 Drs. who have ADD/ADHD. They tear it apart and then teach what it is and how to cope , retrain etc. The second is: When Love IS Not Enough: A guide to Parnting Children with RAD-REactive Attachement Disorder. This woman took kids into her home that no one else would work with as they were labeled unhelpable. She created a love and logic program that works with ADD/ADHD, Autism, PDD, RAD etc. I was given this book by our therapist for my Autistic son. Guest guest
Hi Christine, I was diagnosed ADD/ADHD at 16 and then Bi-Polar 18 years ago. I have been the gamut of meds. I was taking 40 mg 2 times a day for ADD, the 20 of Mellaril at night so I could sleep, then start the vicious cycle over again in the morning as I was so groggy from the anti depressants, which also made me suicidal. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. Girls in school would come up to me and ask how I got so skinny. I loved it. However it really messed up my metabolism and I have now struggled with bulimia (early adulthood) and rollercoaster weight all of my adult life. Then as an adult I was taken off ritalin, put on Prozac which worked well for about 12 years. Yes there is such thing as ADD/ADHD and it does make a difference of Night and Day when not treated. Bi-Polar only exasorbates the symptoms. Home environment, poor parenting skills, diet, preservatives, food colorings, refined flours and sugars, food allergies, allergies etc all contribute to making symptoms worse. lack of a good support system can also contribute. Today I am totally psych meds free for over year now. I use the SCIO device to balance my hormones, emotions, neurotransmitters and EEG/ECG waves. I still deal with the hyperactivity, but have learned to focus it rather than bounce off the walls. I have also changed my diet to something similar to the Feingold diet. Today's kids are the canaries in the proverbial coalmine. Except there is no outside (yet) to go to. We have never had this many man-made compounds in the food supply and the environment. (Let's not use the term " chemical " , since everything can be described as chemical) Even if individual factors have been tested, nobody tested the whole cocktail. We can take straws off the camel's back so to speak. Keep our own home as toxin-free as possible, and feed those poor kids the best diet possible. It ALL works. We do know one thing: whatever causes ADD, it is not Ritalin deficiency. I am Ms Natural. Try Food first is my motto. And: I met a nine-year old online, from Holland where ADD is not nearly as fashionable, who said that his first day on Ritalin was the best day of his life. Who am I to quarrel with that? Drugs work instantly, and in some cases they may be helpful while the deeper causes of the problem are being addressed. Sort of like training wheels for the brain. AND: a child on a drug has an even greater need for whole-food nutritional support and for herbal formulas that support the liver and kidneys to cope with the drug. There is so much ideology surrounding this, it drives me nuts. There is too much fighting over moot points. See the files for more. http://health. Guest guest
I agree that the med may work quickly and effectively but in my opinion is NOT worth the side effects or possible damage it may cause. Diet and environment should be first line of offense not last. Many years ago I ran a day care( as many as 88 kids per day) and many of the children were on Ritalin etc. What we found was some of those children who were " out of control " were actually victims of their own parents lack of parenting skills! And therapist were prescribing drugs for kids whose parents needed to learn how to set boundaries, cook better or cook at all! not serve Mc Donalds everynight. When parents changed diet and or took the Love n Logic courses and actually used what they learned, we saw a huge difference in the behaviors of the children. Just my experience, Jenny Kernan --- Ieneke van Houten <ienvan wrote: > Jenny Kernan wrote: > <My mom quickly put my whole family on the feingold > diet and was able to control the ADD/ADHD in all 4 > siblings and my father. > > > AMEN! > > Today's kids are the canaries in the proverbial > coalmine.
