Guest guest
My friend told me that her chiropractor told her to get one of those wooden foot rollers, the type with nubby spots on the bar, and run her foot over it in one direction. Start as far back on the heel as you can, and roll it as far forward as you can, then drag it back and do that again. You can do this while you are watching TV. She said it got rid of her problem, and she has told other people about it and it worked for them. I mentioned it on this list a while back and that person wrote back and said it worked for them, so you might want to try it. Good luck. Guest guest
I suffered with this for several years before finally seeing a podiatrist. I also have heel spurs and calcium deposits in my feet. I had custom made orthotics (show insert for my shoes) done at that time (this was about 16 years ago). At first, I always wore closed, sensible shoes (I always hated wearing heels anyway) with orthotics in, as well as all the stretching etc you describe. I never went barefoot. ALWAYS had a support under my arch. Then there wasn't much choice for comfortable and attractive footwear, but now there's tons! I would recommend Mephisto and Josef Seibel shoes as ones that have excellent arch and heel support in women's shoes. (Not cheap shoes, but well worth the expense -- I have one pair of Josef Seibel shoes that I bought 14 years ago, and I've had them re-soled once over that time, and they are still really comfortable.) For around the house I wear Haflinger wool clogs, and they are really comfortable. Birkenstocks may be a really good shoe, but they offer nothing as cushioning for the heel spurs. So, I guess what I'm saying, good footwear is essential. 16 years on, I can occasionally go barefoot, I don't have to wear the orthotics unless I'm wearing shoes with no arch support (which I rarely do, but I live and work on a farm, and my farm boots need the orthotics in them). When you get out of bed, try gently stepping on a 2x4 piece of wood under your arch to help with the stretch of the fascia, as well as getting some heat on it first thing. Good luck! It will get better!! Guest guest
Oh, I feel your pain, literally. The one difference between the two of us is that I've got it in the left foot. (which I'd like to gnaw off at the ankle....) It seems that you are doing everything right, the only thing I didn't notice in your mail was the use of orthotics....Your doctor can fit you to orthotics which you then wear in your shoes---it's supposed to really help p.f. and I know a lot of people who have had good success with them. I bought a pair (they're expensive and insurance usually does not cover) and the p.f. in my right foot went away. I still have it in my left but I am also going to physical therapy where they do ultrasound to break up the tissue and they also do a type of electric stimulation to the heel area. Best of luck to you, I know how frustrating this is.. Guest guest
Hi Kate......I didn't have the podiatrist make custom orthotics but purchased OTC ones from his office....they are hard, hard, hard and really make my arches hurt...but I am wearing them anyway, especially in my riding boots....he looked at my shoes and said they had good support .....oh, I forgot to say that I am a horse trainer/riding instructor and am on my feet all day and into the evening...on pavement, concrete and then deep sand in round pens and arenas!!.....I think I am going to seek a second opinion....now whether another podiatrist or a ortho surgeon is the question......thanks Karen >3a.
