Tips for quitting drinking

My boyfriend is quitting drinking in a week. He is going to do AA

meetings for support, but I was wondering if anyone had any health tips

that I might encorporate into our lives to help him along the way the

best I can. Thanks!

Expect withdrawl symptoms such as restless, vomiting,

shaking, sleeping, disturbed sleep, irritability.

Support his efforts. He will want a sponsor with AA to

help when he feels he needs to drink...which will be

all the time for the first 30 days. Detoxing and

rebuilding his body, immune system strengthening,

digestive system and mental. Unless he works on why he

needed to drink so heavily in the first place he will

have issues with staying off alcohol. Addiction

release work is excellent for this using Quantum

Biofeedback for relaxation and other modalities

available within the program.

Good Luck

I am an alcoholic who drank HEAVILY and comes from a line of alcoholic

relatives. Quitting can be easy or it can be hard, but that is up to him. I

found

when I tried to quit for reasons that werent really important to me, like it is

too expensive, it could harm my health in the long run (the long run always

seems so far away), I know I should, my family wants me too, etc. I always

relapesed. When I finally quit for me, because I was serious about quitting it

was

easier and I have been clean for almost 3 yrs now. The first month or two was

hard and I cried A LOT, but after that it got easier and easier. I still have

the urge occasionally, but because I am so focused on staying clean it isnt so

bad. The best thing to do is set realistic goals. Tell yourself I am going to

get through this month. Then move on to I am going to get through this up

coming holiday season, for example or whatever the next obsticle may be. Until

he

is 100 % ready to quit, nothing will work. It is something only he can do for

himself. Also try and keep him busy doing activities that will keep his mind

off drinking. Spend time at the library or shopping or take a trip or

something like that. It may make the first part easier. Also drink lots of

water. It

helps to clean out your system and once your body starts feeling healthier it

will help it not have so many urges or cravings. Good Luck!

I don't know how much he drinks but quitting is NOT going to be easy.

The most important thing is that you support him in any way possible.

Try to stay away from drinking situations at least till he gets

comfortable being around it and not drinking.

If he's a heavy drinker he'll be able to smell the alcohol and it will

trigger cravings. Kind of like when someone smells popcorn. You didn't

even think about it till you smelled it.

Don't let him start another bad habit just to replace this one.

If you can get him to take up a good habit, say exercise, when he

needs a drink.

I come from a family of alcoholics & drug users. Some quit with out

profesional help some needed a pro & some never could quit.

I have some idea whats ahead.

I have an herbal program that helps people who are

trying to quit drinking. It includes a colon cleanse,

liver cleanse and herbs like St. Johns Wort. Contact

me for details if you are interested.

L Glutamine can help stop the cravings. Take it between meals

with NO OTHER PROTEIN though so the body will use it right

to help with cravings.

There have been a lot of alcoholics in my family as well, so I have an idea

about what is ahead, though I have never been this involved in any of their

recoveries. I am happy that he is going to do AA though. I know it really

helped my uncle and his wife, they have been sober for over 12 years now.

Your boyfriend most likely have an overabundance of candida albican

in your body, which drives cravings for sugar and alcohol. You most

likely have it too since it can be passed around. He also most

likely is deficient in amino acids, I'd start with L-Glutamine. I

would also look into adding essential fatty acids, such as with hemp

or flax seed oil.

If he has been drinking quite a bit, it would be advisable to do a

bowel and liver cleanse, such as the one from www.herbdoc.com for

example

You both can do a spit test (or blood test) to determine if your

candida is overgrown. First thing in the morning, spit in a glass of

water. If little strands appear within the hour, your candida is

overgrown. you can also do a blood panel to determine which

defiencies there are, and the level of candida. This can be done

through Genova labs (former Great Smokies lab)

Then you will have to follow a protocol designed to starve the

candida, kill it, and reinforce your natural immunity so it will be

kept in check in the future. Let me know if you want the protocol, I

have studied this extensively.

I learned this from the director of a halfway house for alcoholics.

While your boyfriend is going through withdrawal, have him drink hot

tea with lemon and honey in it--to taste. The honey replaces the sugar

from the alcohol and the lemon helps detoxify the liver. I don't

remember if the tea has a role or not, I think its just a way to get

the lemon and honey down.

There's no limit to how many he drinks, although the average is about 2

to 4 a day.

Also, I don't know if this would apply to drinkers or not, but when I

quit smoking I gave up red meat for a few days. Apparently it slows

down the nicotine from leaving the system. Like I said, I don't know if

it applies or not, but it definitely won't hurt him.

Good luck to both of you,

Denise

Herbs to help:

KUDZU -- If not available in health or herb shops go to an oriental market.

They call it kuzu usually. It is used to thicken soups or teriyake stir fry.

This has been highly recommended for alchoholic withdrawals. Can be included in

puddings, milk shakes etc.

Wild Oats will calm the nervous system. Available in all health food or herb

shops, also look for non-alcoholic tinctures or just get capsules.

Passionflower - same as above as all herbs listed are.

Valerian - will help calm nerves also. Very strong smell, capsules are

recommended.

Hops - very calming,( beer is made with this herb.)

Skullcap - will help calm nerves.

Siberian Ginseng - Helps adapting

Dandelion leaves & root combo - to cleanse kidneys and liver

Milk thistle - to support & build new cells in the liver

Kelp - Strengthens the Thyroid, (capsules recommended)

Alfalfa - chock full of minerals

Borage - for the adrenal glands. (The herb that makes men merry.)

I knew a lady that ran a rehab center who would order all these herbs and

make a tea out of them. 3 - 4 cups a day. The Kudzu was just included in daily

meals in a powdered form. There is no taste in Kudzu. It is like cornstarch.

You might add Licorice to help the taste or Peppermint, or Cinnamon.. Herbal

Licorice comes in sticks usually. It is not the stuff in licorice candies.

Amounts of herbs that she used was one ounce of each, so you will have to

adjust for one day worth of tea. Can be kept in refrigerator for 3 days.

I have known alcoholics that will drink vanilla extract, rubbing alcohol,

mouthwash etc. So be aware of all household things that contain alcohol

Vitamins and amino acids

The L-Glutamine is good advice too. CoQ10, B-12, health food Vitamins For

Men, Essential fatty acids (EFA's),Grape seed extract to cleanse, 1 cap for each

50 pounds per day.

foods to help:

bananas, yogurt, turkey, milk, chocolate (semisweet is best), oatmeal,

cinnamon. Vegetable Juice, Apple Juice, Purple Grape Juice, grapes, avocadoes.

Lettuce. (Turkey every day) Malted drinks, Carnation makes a powdered Malt that

can be stirred into milk.

For Nausea, slice of ginger root held in mouth and bitten into. Can be

chewed and swallowed or boiling water poured over to make a tea. buy ginger root

in the fresh vegetables section at the market.

This will be a battle and I hope he makes it. Prayers help also.

God Bless and Peace,

Thyme

I would like to add to this protocol of colon cleanse liver cleanse

and herbs like St. John's Wort.

1. St. John's Wort is a Natural Anti-Depressant.

2. the liver cleanse and the colon cleanse are of upmost priority.

Then I would add these Vitamins:

Thiamine Vitamin B1; Riboflavin Vti. B2; Niacin Vit. B3; Pyroxidine

Vit. B6; and Vitamin B12.

The Thiamine alone will help to curb craving and clear the mind. A. --

This is my first time to post, but I thought I may have some

information that might help you. I believe the cleanse someone else

mentioned may help a great deal. A person with parasites can crave

alcohol - it is the parasites doing the craving, making him think he

has to have it. This may or may not be the cause of his excessive

drinking, but making sure the cleanses he does also take also take

care of parasites cannot hurt. I have seen this help with several

people.

Great tip ! I never thought of that; the honey replaces the sugars

and the Lemon cleanses the liver; The Tea is important; Black or

Green because the Tea has certain beneficial compounds.

If he cannot tolerate the Lemon; you can use just Honey or add Milk.

I would say; drink as much Tea a day as you drank Alcohol. Add The

Thiamine or Vit. B-Complex tablets throughout the day;eat Salads.

Another nutrient noted to help prevent Alcoholic disease is *CHOLINE.

There are many over-the-counter Choline supplements it's " awesome. A.

Hello: True you have to want to help yourself as a primary goal. I

agree. You know how you wrote:

During the first few months I " cried alot...? This is one of the

detremental side-effects of a Lack of Thiamine Vitamin B1.

A Lack of Thiamine Vit. B1 is assoicated with " miseery.

Can you believe that? Yet this has been known since 1930 !

When you stop drinking all your Thiamine stores go down the drain.

THIS IS WHY WHEN STOPPING ALCOHOL THE THIAMINE VIT. B1 IS USED.

(source; National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism/NIH.gov.)-

YOU MUST EAT EXTRA FOOD DURING WITHDRAWEL TO INCREASE THIAMINE STORES.

One last tip: buy non-alcoholic beverages such as:

Apple Cider or Juice; Grape Juice; and drink those often. Eat bananas.

You can do it a couple of ways. First would be to

change the diet so that the candida doesn't have what

it needs to feed. Second you do a fungus cleanse. And

lastly you would do some of Hulda Clarks zapping

similar to what I do with zapping on the SCIO device

when I work with the Quantum Biofeedback. Zapping will

actually destroy the fungus. Fourth you can take a

supplement such as Endida by Unicity or other Candida

elimination supplements.

Well, what kind of diet changes do you suggest? And how do you do a fungus

actually destroy the fungus. Fourth you can take a

supplement such as Endida by Unicity or other Candida

Research shows approx 85 % of people who abuse substances have a different brain

wiring than others. This effects about 20-25% of the popolation in the US.

Fundamentally the condition is known as " reward deficiency syndrome " in which

there are too few receptors for neurotransmitters dopamine D1 and serotonin 1A.

Alcohol is a sugar, and is metabolized in a manner similar to other simple

sugars. Therefore, " alcoholism " is actually a sugar addiction, as sugars raise

serotonin and to some degree domapine levels.

Additionally B vitamins are depleted due to the alcohol (as well as other

factors) killing the good bacteria in the colon which converts them to the form

usable to the body. Candida yeasts then take over the intestinal tract and

produce toxins. Alcohol also sharply degrades another neurotransmitter,

acetylcholine, which is involved in learning, memory, and rational thought.

Our protocol for recovery, in addition to spiritual development, is to address

these issues.

It includes a colon cleanse and rebuild with probiotics (presently we are

using kefir and activia yogurt), glutamine to cut sugar cravings, heal the gut,

and boost the immune system, and antidepressant like effexor (or 5-HTP/SAMe if

the person prefers natural), and ALC or pirecetam.

hope this helps, we are in the process of putting all this on our site

www.icuhealthy.com but it's taking time!!!!!!!!! We are also interested in

receiving publications from other authors if you find an area in which you'd

like to contribute and be recognised.

Hi Jessica,

You remove from the diet the things such as sugars &

sweeteners, fruit, juices, alcohol, refined flours,

breads etc those things that candida feeds on.

Anything starchy and processed. Using Low Gylcemic

Index carbs to feed the body and you can do that with

veggies etc.

Hulda Clark in her new book Cure for All Diseases has

excellent information on candida. I picked it up at

Amazon.com for around $15

Another good book is called " The 40-30-30 Phenomenon "

by Ann Louise Gittleman. Also at Amazon.com for $5. It

talks about indepth about The Glycemic Index.

Bowel cleanse won't get rid of a fungus that is

systemic. However; Bowel cleanse is good to clean out

and get elimination system working properly again.

I use Zapping to remove candida and fungi. Hulda Clark

has excellent cleanses that will also remove fungi and

Zapping programs with directions for creating your own

zapper.

Lots of water to flush as you cleanse. Ginger tea can

help with nausea, but do not use if you have high

blood pressure.

Then you would work on building the immune system. So

you follow a Clense then build program. And returning

the body to healthy state via healthy nutrition such

as the 40-30-30 plan and supplementation. VIBE by

Eniva is a synergistic wholefood nutrition source with

lots of things that the body needs to rebuild and

repair.

Thanks Matt!

I knew the sugar thing was a big deal, considering that the brain can only

function on sugars. I have also been told that alcoholics rarely eat sweets,

including fruits, which I have found to be true in his case. Also, he doesn't

eat much dairy, so I know his brain is probably functioning primarily on the

sugars in the alcohol.

He does not like to take pills, so supplements in that form are out of the

question. Also, he hates most dairy products, yogurt being high on his " I hate

that " list, so getting him pro biotics through that source probably wont work

either. Can you suggest any other way to get pro biotics in his diet? I have

thought about getting capsules for many supplements recommended, such as amino

acids, pro biotics and herbal suggestions that seemed most useful, and trying to

sprinkle those in his food, but I'm not sure if that will ruin the potency of

the supplements or if it will add an awful taste to his food.

Also, if I can find time I will try submitting an article or two to your

website. I am actually a professional journalist, so you made that offer to the

right person!

Thanks for the interesting information. Everything you write " makes

sense. The Alcohol does deplete the Pro-Biotics with the B-Vitamins

and the Choline. I have read Choline necessary for Thiamine B1 to be

transported around the system. Choline is not expensive; Lecithin is

very similar to Choline and can be used as a substitute.

If people want to buy Supplements such as *Vitamin B-Complex;

Choline; Pro-Biotics and Magnesium; just go to any Health Food Store.

Just ask any salesperson for help;always buy US made or top-shelf. A.-

Many Vitamins and Minerals; Amino Acid(Proteins); Herbs are " cheap. --

(check for sales via the Health Store's website on the Internet).
