Guest guest
I have a 9 year old girl and she is struggling in school she doesn't retain things and has trouble concentrating and focusing, following directions. Her teacher has possbily suggested to test her for ADD, which I have very mixed feelings on. I am hoping there is a vitamin, herb or something natural that we can do to help her. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. I don't know much about either vitamins or herbs Thanks Amy
Guest guest
Hi There, my advice to you would be to see a Kinesiologist and find out why she has trouble - it could be a simple correction. My husband a couple of years ago was doing a mature age apprenticeship and was REALLY struggling and JUST passing his exams - he had one Kinesiology session and went from getting 55% to 95 - 100% in his exams. Its worth a try. also you could look at diet my son in gluten intolerant and if he has gluten he is restless, cant focus ect. I would try all alternative options before medication. And remember if doing an elimination diet it can take a couple of months before a change is noticed (not in all cases though). Hope this helps and please keep us posted!!!! Guest guest
There can be other reasons for her behavior..biological in origin rather than psychological. In these times when too many children are given the title of ADD I'd retain that option for last and have her holistically reviewed. medusa - " Amy Barnes " <amybear54 Thursday, January 25, 2007 2:00 PM a 9 year old girl struggling >I have a 9 year old girl and she is struggling in school she doesn't > retain things and has trouble concentrating and focusing, following > directions. Guest guest
To help her improve her improve her concentration, you may want to give her Brand's Essense of Chicken Ginkgo biloba. It's good for people who engage in brain activities daily like students. Nevertheless, it is advisable to seek consultation of your medical profession before consuming any health supplement products, if you are having underlying medical condition or is on medication. http://99health.blogspot.com/ , " Amy Barnes " <amybear54 wrote: > > I have a 9 year old girl and she is struggling in school she doesn't > retain things and has trouble concentrating and focusing, following > directions. Guest guest
Treating ADD/ADHD in Children and Adults Hi Amy, Some things have been mentioned before and they work some of the time for children such as Feingold Diet and nutrition and supplements. I am a family therapist and have treated ADD/ADHD children and adults for many years. It is OK to let the school test your dgt. so that you will know what areas need to be corrected. Then you can make the choice as to what kind of treatment you will use. They almost always recommend medication but there are other things that you can do that are just as dramatic and easy to do at home. Here are some other alternatives to consider: 1)Violin lessons before the age of 12 or 13 helps to tune the left and right brain and the crossover between the two. I prefer Suzuki method from age 3-13. 2)Neuro bio feedback in an office or at home 3)Rife F/G If you can not afford one, send me a request and I will send you my paper on how to use your computer to do Rife type frequency treatments 4)Vibe machine treatments See who has one near you that you can use at vibemachine.com 5)Brain Gym or One Brain 6)EFT 7)cranialsacral massage 8)Chi Kung healing treatments and best of all: 9)Audiotherapy a passive and highly effective high frequency sound therapy which I do with almost all patients. Takes 5-15/minutes/1- 2x's/day. Calms down almost all children, very good for bright and Indio children. Effective for learning, concentration, memory and retention. IQ will increase from 5-15 points and it will correct other problems at the same time For more info on this if interested, send me an e-mail request. I do nutritional profiles of all children and look at individual and family Hx. Some children have heavy metals(lead is most common, then Al. and mecury) or other toxins and need to gently detox (See Hanna Kroeger and Hilda Clark). Then we start on diet, foods and supplements as needed. Balanced exercise is important and check sleep patterns. Bed in Northern hemisphere should face North, no water beds, energetically check home and school, Check EMF's and radon gas. No microwaves. I use herbal and homeopathic remedies with patients. Eliminate chlorine, floride, white sugar, salt and flour, all chemicals in food and in the house for laundry and cleaning, no chemical drinks,no sodas, koolaid or gatoraid, no aspertaine or sucalose, no MSG. The last three are brain poisons. Try Miracle II products for safe detox and household cleaning. Check for head injuries(THI/CHI). Check on imunizations and detox effects of these and mercury preservatives. And the list goes on. The audiotherapy has made the biggestest difference in these children. There are several methods of doing this. I have trained in most of them and went to Europe to learn methods not done here. (See: Dr. Tomatis and Dr. Berard and read, The Mozart Effect written 20 years ago by a Tomatis student) I brought them home to introduce them to the USA 12-15 years ago and am one of the most knowledgeable therapists in the USA on how to use these therapies with child and adults. In the past 8-10 years, I have developed protocols to use with seniors for post-stroke, neurological diseases and have been almost 100% successful with reversing memory loss and advanced alzheimers disease. Contact me for more information and/or questions. Guest guest
Hi Amy! There's a doctor in Maine who is having wonderful success treating children with ADD, ADHD, autism, etc., and she does it completely naturally. She is a PhD, Naturopath, and even if you can't go see her, many doctors all over the world are following her protocol with their patients, as is the case with my son (30 mos, autistic; we're in TX). Her name is Dr. Amy Yasko and her website is AutismAnswer.com. The Parents Discussion Forum is a place you can search to find if there are doctors in your area who follow her protocol. If you need help locating this list of doctors, let me know and I'll help you. Guest guest
For the past year or so, I've had my 16 yr old daughter taking a product called Attentive child by Source Naturals, which contains DMAE, magnesium, l-Aspartate and grape seed extract. I can't say for certain that this works, but she says it helps her concentrate in class and her grades have definitely improved. (She has stopped taking it on 2 different occasions and then comes to me asking me to get her some more because she notices the difference) Whether her improved attention is due to this supplement or I'm just seeing a connection where there isn't one, I don't know, but she is much better. I buy them from whichever site has the best price at the time (usually Amazon or drugstore.com). I've also purchased them at our local co-op, but at a higher price. God bless you! Julie Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:
Guest guest
Hi Amy, I am so glad you are looking to natural alternatives! The inability to concentrate can have many causes. These days it is all the rage to " diagnose " a child with ADD and drug them up. Keep in mind that cash-strapped schools get extra funding for " diagnosed " kids. There are SOME cases where a stimulant medication like Ritalin or its cousins does more good than harm. Especially in the short term, sort of like training wheels for the brain. Don't look for a single herb or vitamin to make all the difference. We have to get away from the magic bullet approach and look at many factors. The cause of your child's distraction can be low blood sugar, allergies, learning difficulties, nutritional deficiencies, a misaligned neck, general unhappiness, and that is only a few. If your child needs a different approach to learning she will struggle even if her nutrition is perfect. By the way, I dislike the term " learning disabled " . If a square peg doesn't fit into a round hole, is the peg " fitting disabled " ? In my ADD family AFA algae has made a tremendous difference. And my son needed certain eye exercises before he was able to learn to read. Food AND learning help, not either/or. If there is a magic bullet that wonderful wild whole food comes close. It changed my life profoundly. To the point where I think in terms of " before and after algae " . Take a look here, and feel free to pick my brain off list on the topic. This is my special interest, I have been reading up on it for years. ienvan http://wildwholefoods.net Ien in the Kootenays, http://freegreenliving.com
