Cough suppressant?

We keep going through colds and coughs in my house--I have four

kids!! You know those kids--they always have to find the colds. I

really don't want to keep using that over the counter stuff in most

drug stores if I don't have to. I'd rather use a more natural

approach.

Does anyone know of a natural cough suppressant? Is there a recipe

that I could try?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you can still find cherries this time of year, buy some. Take a cup

of so of destoned cherries, some ice, and a little purified water, put

it into the blender and mix until it gets to a nice slushy consistancy.

Taking water is a relatively well known way of temporarily knocking

out the cough, not to mention the gag reflex.

There is something in the cherries themselves that will help stop

coughs, but what that something is escapes me at the moment...combine

the cherries with the water (along with a little honey from around

your region) and you have a mild and pleasant tasting way to get rid

of the coughs.

One thing about the honey -- the reason I mention the local honey is

that it contains the pollens from your region. Even if the coughs are

not due to pollens or dust, you have a built in way for the body to

become accustomed to the pollens and such without creating a massive

immune response.

Hyssop is good...peppermint in small doses is as well...best taken as

teas. The dosage is relatively low, so it is safer to use this way

with children.

If the coughing is due to something sinusy, then goldenseal may be

something you want to look at. One thing about goldenseal - it is used

to dry up the mucous membranes a bit...it can very easily do its job

very to the point of almost too well. Make sure that if you decide to

go this route, that you and the kids are drinking plenty of water.

I hope some of this is helpful...

My husband swears by a salt and warm water gargle. That's his favorite

remedy. One natural thing I've done with my 7-year-old is get her to

lie on her side, then I help her to focus on her breathing. When you

have a cough, you tend to start breathing very shallow, and this adds

to the physical and mental stress of the coughing. If you can help them

to breath all the way down into their stomach, very slowly and using

the breath to help relax themselves, the coughing is greatly diminished

and sometimes even stops completely as they are able to relax and

sleep. Rubbing their back and neck and even arms and feet will help

them to relax. We also keep them away from milk products when they have

throat problems, as milk seems to worsen the problem.

If you can teach all your kids relaxation techniques, this will help in

all kinds of situations, including school, physical discomfort, and

mental/emotional stress.

Good luck, Renae
