Guest guest
The effects of plastic and hydrocarbons in the modern world have created whole new disease catagories that never existed before. The efffects of plastics on the endocrine system are serious and possibly long lasting and or incurable - one should study this subject in depth as I consider it vital to the health of our species and all other species. My wife and I have been studying this subject for many years and indeed are working in the envioronmental movement to oppose the use of many of these inorganic substances from the water, air, and food supply. There are many interesting threads going on here right now I particuarly have appreciated Victoria's postings on the Kidneys as this is also vitally important to understand - since the Kidney's are the source and protector of the primordial qi then uderstanding the Kidney's and their vital role in human sucess and thriving is a key issue in life - yet in western countries these functions are not well understood. Unfortunately because of heavy schedule I do not have time to post on this and other subjects right now. I want to wish all a blessed New Year. Here are some links to what I consider the most important issues in plastic in the environment - many theorists speculate on the role of plastics in many disease -processes - the Estrogen conection is the absolutely most serious problem with plastics - but there are many more. www.worldandi.com/public/2001/october/ee.html www.mindfully.org/plastic/plasticizers/out-of-diet-PG5nov03.htm www.fwhc.org/health/xeno.htm www.mindfully.org/plastic/monomers/BPA-Prostate-cancer3jan05.htm If these links do not work then do a search on plastic and estrogen
Guest guest
http://www.mercola.com/2005/apr/27/plastics.htm http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/19/common_toxins.htm Why Plastics Can Make You Sick [image: Baby with Bottle] A controversy regarding the safety of low-dose effects of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used to make hard, clear plastics such as those found in baby bottles, food-storage containers and the lining of soda cans, has reached the forefront in America. Each year, over 6 billion tons of BPA are used to make polycarbonate plastics. Chemical bonds that BPA forms in plastic can unravel when heated, washed or exposed to acidic foods, prompting the chemical to contaminate foods. And while the plastic industry fails to see the need for alarm regarding the health impact of this chemical, researchers with no ties to the industry beg to differ. *Opposing Results* Your body is extremely sensitive to sex hormones, and miniscule amounts can induce profound changes. Therefore, since BPA imitates the sex hormone estradiol, scientists are afraid even low levels of BPA could have a negative impact. Moreover, there is evidence (among mice and rats) low doses of BPA can cause: - Hyperactivity - Early puberty - Increased fat formation - Abnormal sexual behavior - Disrupted reproductive cycles - Structural damage to the brain Of the 115 published studies researchers reviewed on the low-dose effects of BPA, 94 of them reported harmful effects on mice and rats; 21 did not. Coincidentally, none of the 11 studies funded by chemical companies found harmful effects caused by BPA, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported is detected in 95 percent of all patients tested. On the other hand, more than 90 percent of the studies conducted by scientists not associated with the chemical industry [text in blue] discovered negative consequences. *Environmental Health Perspectives<http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/docs/2005/7713/abstract.html>Free Full-Text Download * *USA Today<http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-04-14-leaching-chemical_x.htm>Apr\ il 14, 2005 * ------------------------------ *Dr. Mercola's Comment:* *The negative effects of bisphenol A (BPA)<http://www.mercola.com/2003/apr/16/food_storage.htm>have been documented for many years. This latest study clearly illustrates the massive conflict of interest that is present in many major industries promoting consumer goods. * *In a manner similar to those used in the pharmaceutical<http://www.mercola.com/2005/mar/2/vioxx_fda.htm>, tobacco, cell phone <http://www.mercola.com/2005/mar/26/cell_phones.htm> and artificial sweetener<http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/hidden_dangers.htm>industries\ , the plastics industry finds ways to create misleading information about the safety -- or lack thereof -- of their products. * *The results of this study again show how research findings can be manipulated by money, and how the greed of the people who head up major corporations can, indeed, have a negative impact on your health.* *BPA is used in many products of modern society, not just as the building block for polycarbonate plastic (from which it leaches as the container ages), but also in the manufacture of epoxy resins and other plastics, including:* - *Polysulfone * - *Alkylphenolic * - *Polyalylate * - *Polyester-styrene * - *Certain polyester resins* *According to the lead researcher in this study, BPA mimics estradiol, a sex hormone that can trigger major changes in your body, which is why medical experts are so concerned about the impact of even tiny amounts of it showing up in people. The problems associated with BPA include:* - *Structural damage to the brain* - *Hyperactivity* - *Abnormal sexual behavior* - *Increased fat formation* - *Early puberty* - *Disrupted reproductive cycles* *What Now?* *With the possibility of 95 percent or more of us having BPA and, quite possibly, many other chemicals in our bodies being very real, it begs the question: Can you do anything about it? * *Prevention* *The only real way to prevent toxins from collecting in your body in the first place is to avoid exposure to them. To help you with this process, I provide some guidelines on how you can learn to identify and avoid common toxins <http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/19/common_toxins.htm> in your environment. * *Treatment* *There are numerous methods that can be used to help detoxify your body, and they vary in cost, time and efficacy. I tend to gravitate toward the treatments that are simple, effective, inexpensive and don't involve taking a lot of supplements. * *The treatments below fit all of these criteria, and can be incorporated into your daily life. The bottle has a number 1 and a > number 7 PC on it. The vender told me it is safe ... The venter wanted you to buy their plastic. Why would they lie ;-) Glass is a fairly inert medium. For infusing herbs (leaves, flowers) its very conventient to use a canning (aka " mason " ) jar. If you're going somewhere put the herb in the jar, pour the hot water in, screw on the lid, and away you go. When you decoct herbs (roots, barks, seeds) for tea, be sure the pot is stainless steal. My husband and I reject insulated travel mugs (the kind made to fit in automobile cup holders) if they're lined with plastic instead of stainless steal. I've tried drinking from tea from a canning jar in the car during long trips but without the convenient anti-splash lid of the insulated cups it spilled all over me. A plus of carrying around a hot canning jar of tea though is the double tasking of it when it can also serve as a hot water bottle/hand warmer on these cold winter days. Guest guest
http://www.hemuz.org/nature/cancer-news-from-johns-hopkins.html So,Johns Hopkins and Walter Reed Army Medical Center got this about half right. Not only should you not expose water or other liquids to plastic and hot or cold, nor should you be using a mircowave for heating anything. Microwaves change the food composition producing free radicals and are extremely dangerous esp. to children, pregnant women, the sick or elderly. The only thing that they are good for is storing pots and pans. So why do you think no one else uses them. This technology comes from the Nazis and even they abandoned it when they saw how it debilitated their troops. Even Russia outlawed them in the 1970's. Do not wait until you have cancer or some other condition. Throw it out now. See mercola.com and alt. therapy groups in for more info on microwaves and there relationship to cancer, CFS, etc. and how they effectively lower your immune system. Get smart. The FDA says that they are safe. Remember what we used to say: " Don't trust anyone over thirty. " Not much has changed. Guest guest
Convection ovens are great. They brown nicely, leave foods moist, and cook in half the time of a regular oven. Not as fast as a microwave, but much safer. You can buy counter top models, too. Samala, Renee ---- I then said honey, kids we are getting rid of the microwave!! Guest guest
When my stove went out a couple years ago and the landlord wouldn't fix it I found a large capacity Toaster Oven at Walmart for around $30. It's huge and I can actually fit a large cassarole dish with 6-8 servings in it. It's the GE Extra Large Capacity Toaster Oven/Broiler. It's large enough to bake 1/2 dozen good sized cookies or muffins in. Jenny Kernan --- divya4753 <divya4753 wrote: > The toaster oven is best. Guest guest
Here's what I've been doing: I stopped using our microwave completely a couple weeks ago, but my husband said " We're not getting rid of it. " I explained to our kids what I've learned about what the microwaves do to our food and our bodies, and found out their science and home economics teachers have been teaching them about some of these dangers, too. So they were easily switched, as long as I continue to teach them how to properly cook or re-heat leftovers on the stove or in the regular oven. While this sounds bad, the result is that Dad's the only one in the family still using the microwave... and no one likes to be the odd man out! I think he's used it once in the past week, so it's only a matter of time before I can " make it disappear " without complaint. In the meantime, I've switched to using only glass containers for leftovers, so that if he does choose to use the microwave, at least he's not getting plastic diodes in his food. It's a compromise for now, but that's what marriage is all about! : ) Julie , Rob & Sue <croker92 wrote: Read this and went " WOW " I then said honey, kids we are getting rid of the microwave!! Guest guest
I personally love a microwave size convection /toaster oven. It still quicken the cooking process in about 1/2 the time and its better than microwave. medusa - " Jenny Kernan " <rainysnana Tuesday, January 23, 2007 1:47 PM Re: Re: Cancer News From Johns Hopkins > When my stove went out a couple years ago and the > landlord wouldn't fix it I found a large capacity > Toaster Oven at Walmart for around $30.
