Guest guest
I think I missed something in the discussion about gas, bloating and neuropathy. Please excuse me if I did. I have been told that cabbage juice is a general tonic for the stomach. Also sauerkraut. Various spices are helpful, especially ginger. Ginger root is best eaten fresh, not in capsules. You can find it in most supermarkets. Don't buy a lot at once, as it does mold. A rather small slice will help the digestive tract. DDS Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Bifidus also can help gas and bloating in the intestinal tract, but you need to take more than one pill at a time, I've found. Or perhaps I need more than one to prevent problems. I have mixed various brands and types of Lactobacillus cultures, and this has helped me much more than just popping a single L. acidophilus capsule. Yogurt is fine, but I have never found yogurt to be effective by itself. It may be different for every person. Back to ginger: if you take capsules, you may need to take 4-6 to feel any positive effects. You can also buy ginger extract; I haven't tried it yet, so can't tell you how effective it is. I'm not sure why one would use olive oil and lemon juice for gas and bloating...olive oil does help food go through the digestive tract faster. It may also be helpful in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, when taken with fish oil(consult an up-to-date book about how much EPA and DHA you need every day), borage oil, and B vitamins(especially B-6, B-12, Folic acid or metafolin). To go off on a tangent, inositol hexanicotinate can also be taken for high blood fats--it's a form of niacin that is safe for your liver. Don't self-medicate with niacin itself--it is dangerous to use high doses. Back to NEUROPATHY--I certainly must have missed something. I assume there was a question that had nothing to do with digestive problems. I have nerve damage in my toes; the cause is unknown. I have been taking alpha lipoic acid for a long time now, and have not found it to do anything. I should add that ALA needs to be taken in a slow-release form; otherwise it doesn't work for more than a couple of hours. 600-1200 mg is recommended for neuropathy and to prevent kidney damage(diabetics might want to pay attention to this). R-Lipoic Acid is the preferred form, also, but is more expensive. Andrew Weil, M.D.(integrative medical doctor in AZ.)is now selling ALA combined with acetyl-l-carnitine and biotin(a B vit.), and mentions that in Germany, ALA is used for nerve damage at the dosage of one gram. My neuropathy may be due to some medication I am taking, although my neurologist feels it is not. All I can say is that ALA is a powerful antioxidant, worthwhile taking for lots of reasons, but my neuropathy has worsened over time, and I have pain to the extent that I need to take a medication called Lyrica; the pain has become unbearable. When I get some money, however, I will try acupuncture, because I have had firsthand experience of having had serious illness caused by a medication, and I especially don't trust new ones. By the way, a deficiency of B-6 can cause neuropathy. Too much B-6 for more than a month can cause neuropathy. There is dispute over how much is safe. Want to add here that there is a resource that perhaps has been mentioned by other members--I'm new, and I haven't had time to read the email I get from this group every day--so please forgive if you already know about this. It's the Life Extension Foundation in Florida. If you Google them, you can get address and phone numbers. They are a good source of information. If you join for a year, you get a very large book of alternative medical protocols and a discussion of research being done on many " hopeless " diseases; you receive a 100 page mag. every month; you get a deep discount on some basic and not so basic blood tests; and best of all, you can call any day of the week and talk with an M.D. about alternative, integrative, and standard medical treatment--they can be a little off the wall at times, but the doctors aren't. You can also speak with an N.D. or a nutritionist. Finally, there is a forum, kind of like this one, I guess, where you can discuss things with other members. I have found this organization very helpful; the only two things I don't like is that they sell supplements for very high prices(pharmaceutical grade, but not affordable for most of us); I also reported to them that a member of one of their boards is an M.D. who lost his license in my state(I was one of his patients years ago), and he falsified his resume, but they did not ask him to resign. The upshot is, you have to be careful whether you're using standard medicine or alternative...and it's good that people are consulting with each other about what to use for their various problems--hope that this long and rambling thing is of help to someone out there. And if anyone has had any luck treating neuropathy, I'd sure be interested! Lyrica only stops the pain, not the freezing sensations I have had in my toes for a year now. mshollycat or hollyweed(not sure which profile has as my default profile, so I could end up being either). I was told that citrus fruit is contra to people with stomach problem. ~virna~ _____ okedoke89 [okejee] Friday, January 05, 2007 11:07 AM Re: Lemon/Olive oil drink and Neuropathy It does sound like a gross drink, but it might be good as a dressing on a salad. Just drinking lemon juice in the morning in water will help your PH. One thing that definitely works to help & even reverse neurophathy is alpha lipoic acid. Take at least 600 mg a day.
