The judge ruled in favor of a Utah company that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's ban. Utah-based Nutraceutical claimed in its lawsuit that ephedra " has been safely consumed " for hundreds of years. Supplements that included ephedra have been widely used for weight loss and bodybuilding, but have linked to 155 deaths, including that of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler. The FDA ordered the substance off the market in April 2004. Judge Tena Campbell's ruling sends the matter back to the FDA " for further rulemaking consistent with the court's opinion " and keeps the agency from enforcement action against the companies. FDA officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Company president Bruce Hough said the decision is about " protecting the public's access to safe and effective dietary supplements. Guest guest
First off I would like to distinguish between ephedera and ephederine. Ephedera isa genus of plant that includes ma huang and brigham tea. Ephederine is a stimulant extracted artificially and replicated for use as a stimulant. Ephedera is a very useful herb, does wonders for things like asthma and other breathing difficulties. When the straight stimulant ephederine is used in diet pills it is often combined with caffine. This means that you are taking two artificial stimulants. (bad on the part of the manufacturers.) Now the danger comes when you combine these with a depressant, like alcohol. It is the dangers of manipulation of natural things, combined with the dangers of lack of information. (no advice not to combine with alcohol, or other products also containing ephederine.) Unfortunately, as my dh says, you can't ban stupid people. Guest guest
> Okay I am new here and have to ask why this is good news, > if it has been linked to 155 deaths? > Thanks, > Sherry I imagine the 155 deaths were probably of people who were self medicating. Would I be far off guessing they were using it for weight reduction? Ephedra has been used in China for thousands of years. The traditional use of ephedra in China is when a person has a cold. Its really quite effective when used properly with the right training. Penel
Guest guest
That number is taken out of perspective. They also fail to accommodate other factors like other medication, abuse of ephedra, and pre-existing conditions. Just think, how many deaths were linked to Prozac (before and after it hit the shelves)? I'm sure it was more than 155. They throw that number out there as a sheeple scare tactic... Let's examine a common sheeple train of thought. On TV... " The FDA has announced that it is banning the drug ephedra, which has been linked to at least 155 deaths. " Sheeple: ...Wow, if it kills people who use it, it should be banned. Never mind the fact that they didn't stop to think that ephedra is an herb, not a drug. They also do not stop to think that viagra has killed many times that amount and the only warning we get is " If your erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention. " Then, whatever thought they had was cut short because " insert mind-numbing TV show here " started. Thanks for the rant, -Shelby ---------- ----------------- > Okay I am new here and have to ask why this is good news, > if it has been linked to 155 deaths? > Thanks, > Sherry -- Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.9.10 - Release 4/14/2005

Guest guest
What the lawsuits and FDA didn't tell you was that the ball player who died consumed massive quantities of diet soda and other foods containing aspartame. I am not sure about the other deaths. cheers jl
