An 'authoritative' study of the U.S. Environmental Protection

Agency which let to widespread acceptance of the - apparently

false - precept that smoking endangers people who are around

and inhale the smoke 'second hand', has been soundly rejected

by Judge William Osteen of the Middle District of North

Carolina Federal Court. Heartland.org has a report on this. Of

course this episode is only the tip of the iceberg of science

today being used as a tool of industry to obtain approval for

previously mapped-out strategies, rather than as a way of

finding out the facts to inform policy making. Mae-Wan Ho of

This not only shows second-hand smoke dangers to be exaggerated and

agenda-driven but has implications for other areas as well, as risk

assessment is becoming more and more a standard tool for legislative

initiatives. If the science we base our laws on is fake, as in the case

of smoking, we cannot hope to progress towards a more sane future.
