Guest guest
Mon, 21 Mar 2005 11:21:04 -0500 " Maj Fiil-Flynn " <mfiil [WATERFORALL] New issue of World Bank Watch - www.worldbankwatch.org News from Public Citizen's Water For All Campaign ********** The World Bank increased lending in the water and sanitation sector from US$546 million in 2002 to over US$3 billion in 2005. Unfortunately, there is little indication that this resulted in more access to clean and affordable water in the global south. Instead the World Bank continues to push a range of conditions such as privatization, decentralization, full cost recovery and changes of national laws. For more background on the World Bank's conditional lending in the water and sanitation sector read " Will the World Bank Back Down? Water Privatization in a Climate of Global Protest " http://www.worldbankwatch.org The latest issue of World Bank Watch is now available on www.worldbankwatch.org. The newsletter includes details on proposed loans to: (LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN) Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru (AFRICA) Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zambia, Uganda (MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA) Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, West Bank and Gaza (EAST ASIA AND THE PACIFIC REGION) Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, People's Democratic Republic of Lao, Philippines, Vietnam (EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA) Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine (RECENTLY APPROVED LOANS) Argentina - Buenos Aires Infrastructure Project - Funding: World Bank (IBRD/IDA) US$200 million Armenia - Yerevan Water and Wastewater Project - Funding: World Bank (IBRD/IDA) US$20 million Chile - Rural Infrastructure Services Project - Funding: World Bank (IBRD/IDA) US$50.26 million (increased from US$50 million) Vietnam - Water Supply Development Project - Funding: World Bank (IBRD/IDA) US$112.6 million (RECENTLY DROPPED LOANS) Georgia - Tbilisi Water Supply and Sanitation Project - Proposed funding: World Bank (IBRD/IDA) US$15 million Jordan - Disi Amman Conveyor Guarantee Project - Proposed funding: Guarantees US$100 million Poor oversight and forced conditionality is in the interest of corporations, not the people!
