On March 19, commemorate the loss of life in Iraq

March 19 marks the second anniversary of the Iraq war. On that day, communities

across the country will commemorate the loss of life in Iraq and call for the

United States to bring the troops home now. These " Stand for Peace " events vary

by community—ranging from candlelight vigils to prayer services to creating

community memorials to honor the dead.

With more than 100 events registered already on our website, Stand for Peace

events complement other community vigils, rallies, and memorials sponsored by

community groups and our coalition partner, United for Peace and Justice.

Join or organize an event in your community: http://www.afsc.org/standforpeace/

These events are also a great time for you to help us gather names for the Iraq

Peace Petition. Download the petition at

Building hope after the tsunami

As emergency relief gives way to longer term assistance in South Asia, AFSC has

forged strong partnerships to help the people of Indonesia rebuild their lives

and communities.

To date, 17,000 people, ranging from school children to foundations, have

contributed more than $4,000,000 to support AFSC's tsunami relief effort.

AFSC staff member Lindsey Rosenberg has just returned from Indonesia where she

visited medical, education, and housing programs supported by AFSC in Aceh

Province.

Urge your senator to vote no to harmful budget cuts

AFSC's new Save Our Services (SOS!) campaign aims to prevent U.S. budget cuts

that would hurt tens of millions of families. As part of the campaign,

supporters throughout the country have so far distributed 10,000 SOS! postcards

to U.S. senators, urging them to " ...not cut federal programs and services that

help people maintain a decent quality of life. "

In an innovative twist, AFSC's Oakland, California, office is distributing

postcards addressed to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) through the

homeless people who sell Street Spirit, a newspaper about homeless issues.
