Guest guest
Hi Mary, Today, I'd like to tell you about a petition designed to help end the deadly legacy of asbestos in the United States by funding a National Mesothelioma Research and Treatment Program: http://www.care2.com/go/z/21957 The history of malignant mesothelioma is the story of Americans who worked hard to build and defend our country. For 50 years, workers and Navy personnel were exposed to asbestos. The so-called " miracle mineral " was common in the workplace and on Navy ships, and many were exposed simply by breathing the air at their job sites. Families were exposed from asbestos fibers on workers' clothes. Thousands of Americans each year now develop mesothelioma, a malignant tumor that aggressively invades the linings of the lungs, abdomen, heart or testicles. We can help eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending disease. Please help us get 10,000 signatures by March 15 to deliver to the Senate Appropriations Committee in time for the initial 2006 budget submission. Some may say that with the costs of the war in Iraq, and President Bush announcing his desire to freeze domestic spending levels, now is not the right time to fund a new $30 million program. But we do have the resources. The National Cancer Institute's budget is $4.8 billion. The Department of Defense's budget (not including the war in Iraq) is $402 billion. The funds are there. As it has always been with mesothelioma, it is a question of willingness to face up to the problem, and a commitment to fix it. Your voice is essential to encourage Congress to make this commitment, end the tragedy, and create hope and life for mesothelioma patients and families.
