Guest guest
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/021605M.shtml NOW | Corporate Rights t r u t h o u t | Programming Note PBS airdate: Friday 18 February 2005, 9:00 p.m. (Check local listings at http://www.pbs.org/now/sched.html.) NOW reports on whether the rights of corporations can trump the will of the people. (They have been trumping citizen rights for 100 years.) When residents of St. Thomas Township, Pennsylvania opposed a company's plans to build a quarry in their small town, they did a uniquely American thing: they elected a town supervisor who shared their view. The ensuing battle, like many around the nation that are pitting communities against corporations, raises a question at the heart of American democracy: can corporate rights trump the will of the people? On Friday, February 18, 2005 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), NOW goes inside the controversy in St. Thomas Township looking at how the newly elected official ended up staying quiet on issues relating to the quarry and examines the legal basis that allowed it to happen. Also on the program, David Brancaccio interviews environmentalist and women's rights advocate Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, about how battles for the environment play out in the developing world. ------- Jump to today's TO Features: (In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C.
