Is it radical to say that individual American citizens should have

more rights than corporations? Well, let's look at a key section of

the " Declaration of Independence " : " We hold these truths to be

self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by

their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these

rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just

powers from the consent of the governed.... "

 

Does anyone see the word corporation in there?

 

We don't, and neither does renaissance writer and radio host Thom

Hartmann, author of " Unequal Protection. " (Hartmann is also a monthly

BuzzFlash book critic.)

 

This book had a relatively small audience when it was published two

years ago, but it deserves a much larger one. In it, Hartmann lays out

the historical case on how corporations came to assume the rights of

citizens or " personhood " in the United States. As a result of legal

maneuvering surrounding the 14th Amendment, companies came to demand

and be granted legal status and protections given to American citizens

under the Bill of Rights.

 

So, it's not a radical thought to think that there is something wrong

with this picture. It, in large part, explains how the White House is

now just another piece of corporate property, because corporations

are, in many ways, competitors to American citizens under the law.

It's like being in one of those television court room reality shows

arguing that your neighbor owes you $45 for taking a scissors to your

poodle's tail, except, in this case, it's the government of the United

States that is at stake. And your adversary is a multi-billion dollar,

multi-national company with a team of fifty Gucci-loafered lawyers.

And you're arguing for your rights as a citizen.
