Next week, confirmation hearings will be held for nominee for Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Your senator, Senator Boxer, sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and will have the opportunity to play a critical role in our nation’s dialogue by asking important questions at the hearing about U.S. policy in Iraq. We encourage you to use this unique opportunity to contact your senator and urge her to pursue a line of questioning regarding U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq. You can help to shape the debate! Action: Please call, fax, or email Senator Boxer and urge her to ask Secretary-designate Rice to explain clearly the administration’s plan for reconstructing Iraq and for withdrawing all U.S. troops and bases from the country. Urge your senator to ask nominee Rice to clarify that the U.S. has no intentions of indefinitely maintaining U.S. troops or bases in Iraq. Urge her to ask Rice to state clearly that U.S. policy is to withdraw all troops and bases. Sincerely, Kathy Guthrie FCNL Field Program Secretary 800-630-1330 Background: You are receiving this action alert because you are in a state that has a senator on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. At confirmation hearings, senators on the relevant committee pose questions to the nominee regarding any issues of concern. We at FCNL want senators to focus attention on the situation in Iraq, and we urge you to contact your senator to that end. At confirmation hearings senators pose questions to: 1) put nominees on the record committing to certain issues, 2) bring to light past actions of the nominee, and 3) begin public dialogues. At this time, we feel that Iraq should be a central component of these upcoming hearings. The U.S. must state that its intention is to withdraw all U.S. military forces and bases from Iraq. After openly stating that it has no imperial intentions to stay in Iraq, the policy discussion may be shifted to the how, the when, and the why of U.S. withdraw. A public statement of intent for eventual withdraw from the administration would be a critical turning point. This confirmation hearing is a unique time to have a national debate on the situation in Iraq. With over 100,000 Iraqis dead, more than 1,300 U.S. troops killed, and almost two years of instability, the time to have this debate is now. Your actions will help to make this possible.
