Donation: $18.50 [Free Shipping.* Retail is $12.95; the difference supports BuzzFlash.] BuzzFlash's Recommendation This book starts where 1984 left off, and is a chilling tale that seems all too real. Frankly, this Orwellian story ends with Bush in his Fourth term, and if you don't think that is a possibility, then you are a naive member of the DLC or DNC (of which there are far too many). Fascism creeps in on cat's feet sometimes, as it has been encroaching upon our Constitution and civil liberties under four years of the Bush administration. Now, as Bush begins the next four, we will move from Torquemada Ashcroft to the Torturer's Apprentice Gonzales as our head of the Department of (In)Justice. It just gets worse with each passing day. This is a novel by a largely unknown author who has accomplished the most difficult task for a novelist: writing a sequel, with skill and verisimilitude, of another person's work. As the website for " America 2014: An Orwellian Tale " notes: Picture a totalitarian United States just ten years from now: With no end in sight to the War on Terror, a fourth-term President George Blush rules without restraint. The Constitution has been replaced with a " Patriotic Citizen's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities " and America has been renamed " God's United States. " The Blush Administration has finally " freed " America of its " treasonous " opposition party, " subversive " media and " obstructionist " judges. In this starkly terrifying political thriller, Winston Smith is a young, successful producer of patriotic commercials for the Department of Homeland Security. While working to fulfill his dream of making a contemporary film version of " 1984, " he runs afoul of government censors, is forced to stand trial in a nightmarish courtroom, and faces brutal execution in a privatized prison. Rescued by a mysterious, powerful young woman and a band of teenaged computer hackers, he joins the Resistance and becomes swept up in a deadly struggle to undermine his government's stranglehold on power and information. Recommendation Cont'd | " America 2014 " | back to top We receive many books that are not bestsellers, and we try to give them all a chance. But we only offer three premiums a week. So we only occasionally get a chance to promote such books. This book, however, we couldn't put down. It is just too close to the truth, just a couple of turns of the screw away from what America is becoming. Tom DeLay, Grover Norquist, Antonin Scalia, John Ashcroft, and countless others of the Busheviks have been unabashed in saying their goal is one-party rule of the self-described (albeit Uber hypocritical) " morally righteous " Republican Party. Dominance of the communication media is the tool by which they are achieving their goal, along with stolen elections, a federal court stacked with pre-enlightenment creationist loyalists to the Bush Cartel, and gerrymandered congressional districts. But at the heart of their control on the psyche of America is their near complete ability to disseminate propaganda through a docile, corporate media, at a time when the entertainment, news and political worlds have nearly merged into a single entity. Winston Smith created lies for the Ministry of Truth, visual images and ads that were narcotics for the misled citizens of America. This is his story in the age of the Orwellian Bush Cabal. At the end of the book, you will find a " The Revised Constitution of the United States of America, " ratified by the one-party Republican state in 2009. We are almost there in content and in years. Indeed, it may arrive ahead of schedule. For those who consider such talk alarmist, read this book. It's a little gift from a patriot who penned a fitting counterpart to Robert Kane Pappas' " Orwell Rolls " (DVD). The party that controls the means of mass communication controls the nation. And the Busheviks believe they rule by divine decree, not by the choice of the voters. As Orwell predicted, such rulers will use endless wars against personified enemies to keep the masses lobotomized. It is the end of the American revolution. These are not patriots who control our government. They are pre-enlightenment fascists. And if the " F " work makes you shutter because it sounds so extreme, then you haven't yet understood what is happening here. Reviews | " America 2014 " | back to top " This is a hell of a story, deftly-written, with a wacky, delicious sense of humor...a clever and imaginative understatement of the crazy world in which we now live. " -Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes " The Bush Administration's relentless assault on civil liberties lends a haunting realism to this gripping fiction. It is a frightening tale of where this government's erosion of our Constitution might take us if allowed to continue " -Professor Linn Washington Jr., civil rights columnist for the Philadelphia Tribune " Dawn Blair is the George Orwell of our day, with all of his literary and political significance. This provocative book will force us to confront the manipulative, totalitarian political tendencies in our country - namely the far-flung but perhaps not far-fetched ramifications of the policies of the extreme right-wing within the Bush administration. America 2014 will soon become must reading for anyone who wants to participate in our nation's political discourse during this important election year. In the Orwellian tradition, Blair's book provides a well-written, enjoyable read, replete with suspense and wit, which you will not want to put down. " -Alan J. Gerson, New York City Council Member, Chair of the Select Committee on Lower Manhattan Redevelopment " In America 2014 Dawn Blair creates a futuristic fable for these pivotal times. The scary part is that it's neither very far in the future nor very farfetched. America under George O. Blush is a frightening cautionary tale of what could very well happen in a country where civil liberties have eroded and patriotic fervor is imposed by the state. This is a gutsy, imaginative, important book. Anyone who cares about the future of this country should read it. " -Hope Edelman, author of Motherless Daughters About the Author | " America 2014 " | back to top Dawn Blair is a pseudonym for author Jonathan Greenberg, who used a pen name for this book to emphasize one of the work's many parallels to George Orwell—whose real name was Eric Blair. Jonathan is a widely published New York-based investigative journalist and author with a Masters in Law Degree from Yale Law School's journalism fellowship program. Book Description | " America 2014 " | back to top Source Publishing, an independent imprint based in New York, is publishing this book as a 1984 for our times. America 2014: An Orwellian Tale is the first book, in this critical election year " culture war, " to satirize a fourth term of an authoritarian " Blush " Administration. Picture a totalitarian United States just ten years from now: With no end in sight to the War on Terror, a fourth-term President George Blush rules without restraint. While working to fulfill his dream of making a contemporary film version of 1984, he runs afoul of government censors, is forced to stand trial in a nightmarish courtroom, and faces brutal execution in a privatized prison. Rescued by a mysterious, powerful young woman and a band of teenaged computer hackers, he joins the Resistance and becomes swept up in a deadly struggle to undermine his government's stranglehold on power and information. As it conjures up a frightening--and highly controversial--vision of the future, Dawn Blair's gripping novel of American dystopia lays bare the most incendiary political issues of the present day.
