I guess this group is so ingrained it is not welcoming to new members

desiring to learn. I asked for book recommendations a couple of

weeks ago to help me learn and not one reply. Sorry I don't have a

terminal disease that needs treatment NOW...I want to learn how to

take care of ourselves holistically so we won't have to add that

post. I love really good books to learn from....any

recommendations? Maybe another group would help more?

Recommendations on that would be appreciated. I think this group must

be a group of " regulars " that just post what ever they have found on

the net that day from what I have deduced from reading the archives.

A lot of copy and paste " articles " that are interesting to read. But

no one replies to personal posts. I just wanted some good books to

read and research on holistic health. Have found some of the post

and articles interesting but not applicable to my health. Someone

explain this board to me as I am confused.

Hi Jennie,

I think a lot of people who post here are professionals,

you know, people who are very busy, and not everything gets replied

to straight away.

someone may have noticed your post and have to do some research

themselves in order to answer you, that could take time.

I would think the time of year would make people even busier, too.

I have not been coming here for very long myself, but I have had some

personal answers to my own posts, and been given some very good

advice too.

I may have had to wait a little, but thats ok with me, after all I

got some very good professional advice for no charge, and that is

something I am very grateful for.

No one is obliged to spare their time or share their professional

expertise with me, after all, so if anyone is kind enough and makes

the time to do so, I consider it a big favour.

I agree with you that I dont think its really meant to be a support

group in the chummy sense of the word, it seems to be more a source

group for information.

I didnt notice your arrival myself, so I dont know what type of books

you were looking for, I am not a professional in anything except

Reiki, so I am not a health expert either.

Whats more I am quite sick myself, and my computer time is limited,

that is probably why I missed it.

There are a lot of good health articles being posted here, and

brilliant political posts, I found it a bit different at first as

well, but I figure not all groups are alike.

There has to be a place for everything, and I guessed that this is

mainly a place for reference.

Then I came on here and vented yesterday when I was terribly upset,

and got such a sweet and kind response, when I wasnt expecting anyone

to even notice my post :o)

What are your health problems, Jennie?

I am sure that there must be someone here who could point you in the

right direction, maybe you could ask again for what you want to know?

all the best

Yvonne

I never saw your original request.

There are hundreds of excellent books available on health.

Not knowing how much you know or what your interests are makes it difficult.

What started me down this road of nutritional medicine was after I read

Weston Prices

excellent book, " Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. "

This is a classic and should be read by everyone.

After that any books by the following authors I highly recommend:

Robert Cathcart

Emanual Cheraskin

Abram Hoffer

William Kaufman

Frederick Klenner

Michael T Murray

Linus Pauling

Lendon Smith

Irwin Stone

Roger Williams

Take your pick

Re concern about no response:

I think you might have missed this December 16, 2004

response from Nora Gottlieb.

Also the group archives are filled with thousands of

valuable articles. You might try searching key words

of interest and starting a collection of valuable

articles. I try to save articles I think might be of

value for friends, family, and health care providers.

I like to cut and paste them into Microsoft Word so I

don't end up with all of the heading at the top of the

page. Then I file the article by subject on my

computer.

Perhaps somebody knows of a program which cuts off

the email heading automatically.

Best wishes.

I really do not know how to reply to your post.

It is so full of assumptions, misconceptions, basic misunderstanding that

it is much more than just " why didn't someone asnwer my post " .

Rather than try and answer your post from your point of reference, I

will try and tell you how this group came about and how it works.

I was very sick and on my last legs, due to having a lifetime of

allopathic poisoning and a lifetime of misinformation on many subjects.

I finally realized that my doctors and the standard allopathic care

were the most dangerous things to my health. I also knew that if

anyone was going to " save me " it was going to have to be me. I was

forced to be my own doctor. O.K. after that what do you do and where

do you go? I started reading on the net and started buying good naturral

health books. I bought a couple of hundred used books on Half.com about it.

I couldn't find any group on the web that seemed to " fill the bill " .

They were promoting all kinds of off the wall stuff, and very little

about real nutritional solutions. The few that were fairly good were

limited to specific areas like herbs or TCM. but to me that also

seemed too narrow to fully cover what I needed. Only option was the

same solution as before. If I wanted it, it looked like that I was

going to have to do it myself. Yes, I would have prefered to find a

group that was just as I wanted it to be, but realized that I had no

right to expect that people change to suit me.

I started this goup instead and it was called Gettingwell. It was

meant to be for a small select few who didn't want to push their

products, weren't complete idiots, didn't want a lot of inane

chitchat, wanted high quality information, wou;d help collect

information in good articles to be placed in the archives to act as a

repository for information to be used by all. It was designed so that

those who wished to or had to become their own doctors could help each

other with information. It was not set up to promote our services or

products because we didn't have any nor want any. To many that concept

is not welcome. They do not want to read and take the time to learn.

They do not want the responsibility of their own health.

The group kept growing even though I was removing and banning people

who didn't fit ( it seemed like daily, between 600 to 700 by now.) Most were

removed because they came here expecting to spam us with commercial crap. Oh

they would post some chitchat of other but with the real intention of

spamming us, but for a lot of different reasons. Others just wanted us to change

to please them. With 100 new members a month coming and a bunch leaving each

month it becomes very hard to try and fulfill all of that which people need and

want. To make it much more difficult, those two are usually not the same thing.

Well, people kept comming and I changed the name to Alternative

Medicine Forum to more accurately reflect the purpose of the group. It

became a large group. Along the way, I put up a links page to be used

as a reference library to other sites so that members could use it to

research any aspect of our version of alternative healing. I added

files. I put up a web based bulletin board to post stuff by

classification. I posted thousands of articles here and so did a few

others. I have edited tens of thousands of postings and tried to keep it to a

certain standard. In the process I have probably angered most of the

people here at one time or another. That is only part of what has happened

along the way. I have been vilified, attacked, demonized, etc. many,

many times. Bottom line, I don't care. I have to call em like I see them.

Groups are funny things. Actually people are funny things. Running

this group has been part of an experiment in human nature. Many come

here expecting that others fullfill all of their wishes. They present

themselves and say " here I am " , it is now your job to heal me " . or

" here I am, it is now your responsiblity to educate me " or some such

other nonsense. Others come with the exact opposite view.

Well, in spite of my efforts to keep the group somewhat small and my

strict policy of tossing anyone out who complained, acted bad, or just

didn't fit in we still became one of the largest groups around.

Where do we go from here? I truely do not know. For my part it is like

having a bull by the tail, you want to let go but you are afraid and

just can't quite do it. What I mean by that is for my part, it has been way

too much work for too long, I would just as soon as shut it down now

in it's present form, but I also do not want to strand the few who

might come along and fit in and who may need the information. So,

keeping it open for the few, I will have to put up with many who

really don't belong, will probably never have enough of an open mind,

do not have a willingnes to do the work to learn, are willing to put in the

effort, etc

Not all groups can be all things to all people. We have to

discriminate in our lives to what suits us personally. If we do not find it and

still want it, then we have to create it.

On the flip side, I have met some amazing people here and on the web.

They were intelligent sensitive caring people who went way beyond the

call to help many people.

Some come with almost all wants and very little thoughts of giving.

Some come with giving and say very little of their own wants and

needs. Everyone is a combination of those two drives. Some here are

very sick, and say little about themselves. They help others who cry for help

even though they may not be as ill as the ones helping them. Some come to

" show how much they know " to others when a lot of times they are quite

ignorant to much of alternative medicine. Some try to help others out

of a sense of altruism, even though their knowledge is lacking. So,

this group is composed of complex individuals who are severely limited by a

curmudgeonly, sometimes bitter old man who says someone has to do it.

So, I think the bottom line is that a person who comes here gets close

to what their preconcieved notions allow them to find. If a person

wants information there is a wealth of it in our daily postings,

archives (27,000 articles), files, message boards, individual

responses, links library, etc . Most people do not take advantage of

this information. They prefer short easy answers that someone else

provides when they ask for it. Those short answers are not usually

correct, at least not fully correct even though sometimes partially correct.

The people who find this group the hardest to adjust to are the ones with the

most strongly held preconcieved ideas. But they really didn't need this

group in the first place as they usually already know it all and have all of the

answers anyway no matter what the subject.

This group like many things in life is what the indivual person makes of it. It

can be a wealth of knowledge and maybe the key to important things

about your health, your life or even oneself. Or it can be an iritant,

boring, agrivating, and some hate it.

The question for each is as much " who am I, and what relation do I

have with others? " as much as " who or what is his group? "

regards,

Frank

My experience is that the more well I am the more that people respond to me.

Thus I came up with the theory that not having one's posts responded to is

an indicator of bad health just like many other indicators. It is a symptom.

Other indicators of bad health might be chronic tiredness, depression,

excessive colds and flus, obesity, irritability, addictions, panic attacks,

poor memory, attention deficity, insulin resistance, uncontrollable

aggression, wimpiness, ... etc etc.

We can try to fix up any indicator by attending to it as if it were the

problem itself rather than a symptom. But that approach does not work. It

cannot. It never will. The approach that works is to treat each symptom as

a sign post pointing to the underlying condition.

So if one's posts do not get the responses that they deserve then one might

ask oneself what biochemical imbalance in one's body is generating a

communicative energy that is not inviting to others.

After asking that question then one will probably come eventually to Dr

Google to try to find out the answer. Dr Google is a lot cheaper and more

efficient and more comprehensive and more effective than a bunch of books,

in my opinion.

I research health obsessively Jennie. I had to learn how to do that myself

just as you are attempting to do. I also got a lot of my posts ignored in

various forums. Probably this one will be also. But I am half way through

my recovery and when I am fully recovered and my brain waves are more

inviting then the responses will come flying in. I'm sure.

You too. You can make it a game.

" How much better am I than this time last year? "

" Oh, last December I wrote 5 posts to email lists and got 1 tepid answer.

This December I have written 25 posts and received 51 responses including 3

marriage proposals. I think my underlying biochemistry is improved

radically. Therefore I will keep on doing wot I've been doing... "

Recommendations on that would be appreciated. I think this group must

be a group of " regulars " that just post what ever they have found on

the net that day from what I have deduced from reading the archives.

Frank, thankyou for your descriptive, thoughtful, and truthful post!

I am new here like the woman who posted about the innerworkings, to put it

nicely, of this group and it is very interesting to learn how it started, who

started it, and why!

Thank you so much for doing it!

And I really mean that. I'm not just saying this because I'm a newbie, the

history of a group is very important, I'm one of those folks who likes to know

where things came from!

I have found alot of information here I did not know, I am in the process (a

lifelong one, I hope!) of gathering information on better living, and also

specific needs. I also have ideas to give, though I am in learning-mode right

now.

I don't know much about herbs, alternative medicine, or non-traditional healing

methods, and I really feel this is something I must learn about, especially

since I have 2 children I must care for. I feel fully caring for them includes

nutrition! Funny notion, I know, but that's just the way I am! ;-)

Again, thankyou for starting this group, and explaining about it in depth--the

person who posted the post you are replying to did me a service by doing so, she

elicited a response from you about the history of this group, and it was very

informative.

I will try to be a good group member, and I'm all ears, for now!

And, nice to meet you, too! :-D

But I do wish to say thanks for a good conversational post--which I tend to

agree with, btw--communication is key, and this is another area I work on

constantly.

Re: Re: One answer would have been

appreciated, received ZERO

Wow. Thanks for replying Glenna. Really.. I am not pretending; when I was

really, really, horribly sick a year and 2 ago nothing I put out to people

seemed to evoke much interest. It was difficult to deal with.

Glenna, you replying indicates to me that my neurotransmitters are becoming

more tuned in the configuration that I want.

I really like this group because it has a very good signal-to-noise ratio.

I like it that it is information rich and light on chat. So in fact I will

not encourage this thread to go on much more. If others reply I will reply

personally rather than on the list. Unless there is something very

informative that arises.

You ask have I accepted any of the marriage proposals? Well; I have to

admit I made that bit up. For effect. But the rest was not made up. If any

proposals do come, I will need to check out with my wife whether we are

going to become Mormon and move to Utah. ;-)

Dear Frank, and to the other poster too, Jeanne:

Just that I appreciate all you do Frank. I'm sure most of us or some

of us, never think that somewhere there is a human being, making all

this happen. (the website).

And re the nature of the group. Well there is so much information -

almost all of it excellent - I don't come here unless I have the

time. So some posts do get missed. But don't take it personally, just

post again, you'll get an answer eventually.

best,

ellen

Most were removed because they came here expecting to spam us with

commercial crap. Oh

us to change to please them. With 100 new members a month coming and

a bunch leaving each month it becomes very hard to try and fulfill

all of that which people need and want. To make it much more

difficult, those two are usually not the same thing.
