Dear Penny,

I'm not providing a diagnosis or advise but just writing what comes to my

mind when I read your post about being diagnosed with osteoporosis. First of

all, I want to thank you for raising the issue, for I myself have been

procrastinating in implementing the following ideas:

The human body, like any biological entity, adapts to it's environment.

Bones that do not have to resist do not need to be strong.

Just like teeth that don't have to chew unprocessed foods.

Yes, starting on supplments is important but isn't that a little like

pouring a thimble of water out of a sinking ship as you go out when you need

to throwing out buckets?

Have you asked the doctor that prescribed that nasal spray about the

research that was done on that drug regarding the effectiveness in reversing

osteoporosis. Keep in mind that I am a Doctor of Chiropractic and have no

formal training in pharmacology. I do know that in Sept. at the

Congressional hearings the FDA admitted that they would keep antidepressents

on the market although they know it is causing CHILDREN to commit suicide

and Vioxx was taken off the market Oct. 30, 2004 after over 55,000 Americans

died of heart attacks becaues of it. Now the Celebrex concerns hit the mass

media. What this tells me is that I don't trust the FDA, the U.S.

Government, the AMA, and certainly not the mercenary drug manufacturers to

actually research the drugs before they are put into the food chain for

human consumption.

When you fill your prescriptions don't just accept the computer printout for

lay people, ask for a copy of the PDR-either the flyer that come with the

bottle in the box or get them to copy the PRD pages for you. They will often

resist but be persistent. Sometimes the manufacturers will let laypersons

access that information their website www.nameofthedrug.com

(that's not a real website name-put the actual name fo the drug between the

www and the .com). You can read for yourself how many were in the studies,

the effectiveness, side effects, contraindications, etc. You can also go to

your local health food store and start researching foods that are high in

the nutrients you need to fight osteoporsis which you should have been

eating for the last 20-40 years. Dark leavy veggies come to my mind as a

rich source of calcium. This time of year you can get kale, mustard greens,

etc. very cheap at the grocery store. They are usually so huge you have to

cook them in your largest pot. Use bottled water and don't put nitrate

containing bacon in them. If you don't like eating the greens, just keep

plenty of water over them as you cook them down more and more each day

througout the week and just drink the mineral rich juice when you get

thirsty. You can even fill a bottle with the juice before you go to work and

drink it instead of that soft drink that you are probably drinking that is

leaching the minerals out of your bones. Bottom lines is that you will

probably need to do more research on your own in addition to taking the

prescription minerals that you are been provided. Since you've already

waited until your bones are so weak that you would have a fracture of your

rib you are already endangered to having a broken hip as you age.

Many older people think that they fall and then they break the femur just

below the ball that fits into the acetabulum (hip socket for leg) when in

fact their bones are so weak the bone breaks from the weight of their body

and then they fall. This is frequently the elderly malady that ends their

being able to live independently and is the beginning of the end as their

savings are consumed with costly health care in the hospital and nursing

homes. Well, just writing this to you has gotten me scared enough myself

that today I'm actually going to find those walking shoes that I haven't

been able to find all week and actually keep my agreement with myself to

walk instead of driving to the mall to protest the War on Iraq when those

people cannot grow their gardens or shop for calcium rich veggies while they

are being napalmed.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thank you very much,

Sandra Lance, D.C.

Hi, I'm new to this list but I was very interested in this. About 5

months ago I was found to be on the verge of osteoporosis, not

completely there but bone mass going way down. (had a fracture of a

rib to find this out) They of course put me on supplements of

calcium & vit D plus the new nasal spray. Been looking into what

really helps.

thanks Penny
