Christina,

I think it is very good that you are asking questions.

The truth is it is a lot of work to educate oneself

and to start to understand why things are the way they

are. It’s unclear to me whether you are asking why as

a way of suggesting limits to polite conversation or

whether you are sincerely wondering why the person

perceives the world differently from your perception.

Most people use “why” in the first sense, to silence

and limit permitted discussion. If your question was

truly wanting to understand, then here are some

suggestions for your answering them. If you are

suffering from a serious health problem, it is

particularly important that you let go of the need to

be right and you commit to changing your life now.

Over time if you develop a habit of study, your will

grow in speed and strength, just like an athlete who

trains regularly.

These are some suggestions for learning faster:

Perhaps others could add their own tips.

1. Give up the need to protect your beliefs and

assumptions.

2. Give up the need to discourage others from being

different, thinking differently from you, or having

different experiences and expressing different

conclusions.

3. Question authority, custom and taboos. Reserve the

right to find your own truth.

Be your own person.

4. Be willing to listen to people you don’t agree

with, to try new approaches. Be willing to change.

5. Listen and read in search of nuggets of truth.

6. Keep a notebook to jot down information. Date each

entry for easy reference later.

7. Remember that learning takes time and repeated

exposure to information. Review your notes and

materials.

9. Always use a dictionary when unsure of the exact

meaning of a word.

10. Recognize that others are farther on the path or

have had personal experience in that matter. Others

can jumpstart your learning if you are willing to

listen.

11. Develop a tolerance for unpleasantness. Much of

what is true is also painful.
