Diabetes Four Times More Likely in Vitamin D Deficient White Americans

Contact:

Professor Robert Scragg

University of Auckland

Auckland, New Zealand

Today, a group from New Zealand headed by Professor Robert Scragg,

discovered that diabetes is four times more likely in white Americans

with serum 25(OH)D levels lower than 18 ng/ml (43.9nmol/l) than in

Whites with 25(OH)D levels greater than 32 ng/ml (81 nmol/l). Seventy

five percent of the white Americans had levels less than 32 ng/ml.

Scragg's group found no such association in black Americans; probably

because most Blacks have been vitamin D deficient for so long their

pancreas has lost sensitivity to vitamin D. The risk for Hispanic

Americans was six fold .

Dr. Scragg has published more than 140 articles over his 50 year

career as an epidemiologist.
