ANH Rebuttal of John Hopkins (bogus) meta-analysis on Vitamin E

IAHF Webmaster: Breaking News, Whats New, Codex, EU FSD, Trans Tasman

Harm-onization- Anti Eugenics

IAHF List: Many of you have called my attention to the recent media

smears against Vitamin E. The Alliance for Natural Health has done a

superb job of rebutting this bogus attack (see below) and please

forward it

widely!!

As we come down the stretch, we can expect an increasing number of

bogus attacks on natural products just like this one. Whenever you see

them

please forward them to me and to ANH. For every action there is an

exact and opposite reaction. The Cartel may control the mainstream media,

but they don't control the internet.

John Hammell of IAHF, Rob Verkerk, PhD of Alliance for Natural Health,

and Suzanne Harris, JD who will have just returned from the Codex

meetings in Bonn and in Paris will be in San Diego for the Emergency Anti

Codex meeting on Friday November 19th from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the

Coronado A room of the West Tower of the Sheraton at 1380 Harbor

Island Dr.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Hope to see some of you

there, and will have a DVD of the meeting to send out to all of you upon

our return. IAHF is on the verge of having its own weekly radio show,

will let you know when that starts soon. The Cartel can run, but it can't

hide!!

Please keep those donations coming in to

see ANH's excellent rebuttal of this mindless attack on Vitamin E

below....... and please forward it------- send a donation to ANH for

their

lawsuit to overturn the EU Food Supplement Directive. This lawsuit has

huge global importance. Dr.Whittaker just donated $10,000 to it.....

ANH Rebuttal of John Hopkins (bogus) meta-analysis on Vitamin E

Many of you will have seen the latest negative study on Vitamin E. For

the BBC News report, click here and for those who receive plain text use

the following link www.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3998847.

We have received feedback from the scientists in the ANH Expert

Committee and the same concerns have been voiced. The key is to

remember that a

meta-analysis is only as good as the data used. If the data is

selective, or only looks at a limited aspect of a nutrient, as is the

case with

the present study, the analysis will be limited in terms of its

validity.

You will notice the BBC have used a small quote from the response from

Dr Verkerk at the end of their news item.

We include below the full response to the BBC given by Dr Verkerk

yesterday, following their request for a " couple of paragraphs " :

It does not come to us as a shock that a meta-analysis of 19 clinical

trials shows little beneficial effect from high doses of some forms of

Vitamin E. In fact, results from these studies are well known and have

been well publicised, particularly in Sweden. Although the John Hopkins

study has not been publicly released, we assume that the studies

included in the meta-analysis are very likely to have involved only one

particular formof Vitamin E, namely alpha-tocopherol, which is often

produced synthetically.

A convincing body of evidence now points to the fact that

alpha-tocopherol in supplements, particularly at high doses, might

reduce the body's

uptake of vital components of Vitamin E which are much more effective

antioxidants than alpha-tocopherol (e.g. Handelman GJ et al,J Nutr 115;

807-13,1985; Burton GH et al,Am J Clin Nutr67; 669-84, 1998; Huang HY,

Appel LJ.J Nutr 133; 3137-40, 2003.) These components includegamma- and

beta-tocopherols, and tocotrienols.

It is a very rich irony that the European Commission has seen fit to

allow the alpha-tocopherol form in its its new Food Supplement Directive,

set to come in to force in August 2005 across Europe if

unchallenged, whilst it bans the natural, food forms, which are much

more beneficial as

food supplements. This is one reason why we are challenging the

Directive in the European Court of Justice next year.

Negative publicity about Vitamin E, which is likely to follow as a

result of misinterpretations over the science behind the John Hopkins

study, could scare people unnecessarily and stop them using important

food

supplements. Food supplements are invaluable as a means of guaranteeing

levels of key nutrients, such as natural Vitamin E, known to be

depleted or deficient in the diet of large numbers of people.
