Guest guest Posted November 1, 2004 Report Share Posted November 1, 2004 Evening Primrose Oil(Oenothera biennis): Reduced Renal Damage --- Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera biennis) Parts used: Oil extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose, black current or borage. It contains a high level of gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a fatty acid. Historical and traditional use: It has been used, as an adjunct to medical care, for diabetes, eczema and rheumatoid arthritis. Additional conditions include PMS, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome and tardive dyskinesia. In vitro, GLA demomstrates anticancer effects. In vivo, in mice, some studies have demonstrated tumor regression. Preliminary studies with humans and cancer have reported subjective " improvement " . Active constituents: GLA is comverted into prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). PGE1 has potent anti-inflammatory properties. It acts also as a mild blood thinner and vasodilator. GLA a very common fatty acid that is found in nuts, seeds and most vegetable oils. However, inadaquite nutrition can prevent the conversion of dietary amounts of GLA into PGE1…thus the reasoning behind dietary supplementation. Side effects and drug interactions Should not be taken with phenothiazines. Enhanced clinical response with ER (+) breast cancer, taking tamoxifen and EPO together ] EPO reduced cyclosporin-induced renal damage (in rats).
