While the calamitous failure of pharmaceutical suppliers to come up with the required quantities of flu vaccine provides the immediate backdrop for the piece, the discussion goes deeper. It is really about why the US health system has dismally failed to deliver, despite an almost unbearably high price tag. The profits of pharmaceutical companies have been put before health. There is no interest in prevention - it would simply be bad for business. The solution that is proffered by Barlett and Steele makes sense.
