Hi

My partner has been taking various alternative remidies to help with

her CFS. Recently however, olive leef extract seems to make her very

hot and violently sick, within an hour of taking it.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Pete,

CFS involves interaction between the immune and central nervous systems,

interactions about which scientists know relatively

little.

Herbs can help to move toxins out of the body. They can also support

and tone the major organs of the body as they perform their

cleansing functions, helping them to handle a higher than normal

load of waste.

Fat-soluble chemicals have a high affinity for fat tissues and cell

membranes. In these fatty parts of the body, toxins may be stored

for years. During the release of these toxins, symptoms such as

headaches, stomach pain, nausea, fever, fatigue, dizziness and

palpitations may occur.

Cleansing the body of waste products, with the excessively rapid

release of toxins can cause unpleasant, acute symptoms.

The liver is the gateway to the body and in this chemical age its

detoxification systems are easily overloaded.

Clearing accumulated toxins is believed to free the body so that it

is able to function better and regain the energy necessary to heal

itself.

Though cleansing may be one step, detoxification is not a single

event but an ongoing process that supports the body's natural

ability to effectively dispel toxins on a daily basis.

Part of that process is consciously limiting the toxins that enter

the body in the first place. Restricting or eliminating use of the

usual culprits -- caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol, drugs, tobacco,

synthetic or petroleum-based body products, and household chemicals -

- is a good place to start.

Eating an organic natural-foods diet, drinking sufficient amounts of

pure water, and getting regular exercise are actions that begin to

facilitate detoxification.

Our bodies adjust best to gradual change, so incorporating these

practices into everyday life is recommended before embarking on a

more stringent course for flushing toxins out of your system.

Supplemental cleansing practices include laxatives, colonics,

saunas, steaming, skin brushing, exercise, massage, mineral baths,

and body wraps.

Keeping the kidneys free from obstructions and in good working order

is essential to the process of effectively eliminating toxins.

Phase One - Detoxification Pathway

An example of the phase one pathway is the Cytochrome P-450 mixed

function oxidase enzymes.

This pathway converts a toxic chemical into a less harmful chemical.

This is achieved by various chemical reactions (such as oxidation,

reduction and hydrolysis), and during this process free radicals are

produced which, if excessive, can damage the liver cells.

Antioxidants (such as vitamin C and E and natural carotenoids)

reduce the damage caused by free radicals.

If antioxidants are lacking, toxic chemicals become far more

dangerous. Excessive amounts of toxic chemicals such as pesticides

can disrupt the P-450 enzyme system.

Phase Two - Detoxification Pathway

This is called the conjugation pathway, whereby the liver cells add

another substance (eg. cysteine, glycine or a sulphur molecule) to a

toxic chemical or drug, to render it less harmful.

This makes the toxin or drug water-soluble, so it can then be

excreted from the body via watery fluids such as bile or urine.

Through conjugation, the liver is able to turn drugs, hormones and

various toxins into excretable substances.

For efficient phase two detoxification, the liver cells require

sulphur-containing amino acids such as taurine and cysteine. The

nutrients glycine, glutamine, choline and inositol are also required

for efficient phase two detoxification.

Organic eggs and cruciferous vegetables (eg. broccoli, cabbage,

Brussels sprouts, cauliflower), and raw garlic, onions, leeks and

shallots are all good sources of natural sulphur compounds to

enhance phase two detoxification.

Thus, these foods can be considered to have a cleansing action.

The phase two enzyme systems include both UDP-glucuronyl transferase

(GT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GSH-T).

Glutathione is the most powerful internal antioxidant and liver

protector.

It can be depleted by large amounts of toxins and/or drugs passing

through the liver.

Cleanse the colon.

It is important to clean out your colon before you begin a detox.

The colon can be full of toxic substances, and toxic overload can

make you sick.

By cleansing the colon, you will also decrease the amount of toxins

that your liver has to process in the first place.

If the diet is already rich in fiber and you drink at least eight

glasses of water each day, your colon should be working just fine.

If not, try adding fiber in the form of fresh organic fruits and

vegetables, whole grains, cooked dried beans and psyllium seed husks

or ground flaxseed, along with probiotics to support the other

beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

Water, water, water. Getting enough pure spring water while you

detox is key to flushing toxins from the kidneys, colon, and skin.

If you drink water only when you're thirsty, you're not drinking

enough.

While you detox, drink half your weight in water (in ounces.)

For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 60 ounces of water.

Don't substitute juice for water. " When you drink juice, you are

requiring the digestive machinery and the pancreas to fire up and

work, " says Dr. Berry. " Pure water allows your body to flush out

toxins without mobilizing your digestive system. " .

Sleep. During detox, you may find you need more sleep than usual in

the first few days. This is normal since it takes a great deal of

energy to eliminate the toxins in your body.

Aim to get at least eight hours of sleep each night, and schedule

nap and relaxation times throughout the day.

During the first few days of a detox, you may not feel at your best.

Often you will experience withdrawal symptoms as your body adjusts

to no caffeine, sugar, or alcohol. Also, toxins are entering your

bloodstream to be eliminated, which taxes your body.

You may experience headaches, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, and

irritability.

The good news is you should begin to feel better within three or

four days. Best of all, you will be cleansing your way to a healthier body.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or " Epstein Barr Virus " (glandular fever)

CFS is associated with immune dysfunction, which allows infections

with a variety of opportunistic microbes from herpes-

viruses,retroviruses, fungi and parasites.

Many sufferers will have an overgrowth of the yeast Candida

albicans, along with a chronic active infection with the Epstein-

Barr Virus ( EBV or glandular fever ).

In those with a healthy immune system the virus is kept in a dormant

or latent state and does not produce any symptoms.

If the host's immune system becomes weakened or overloaded the

glandular fever virus (Epstein-Barr Virus-EBV) begins to reactivate

and cause disease.

EBV belongs to the " herpes " family of viruses, and all herpes

viruses tend to reactivate in those with compromised immune systems

such as in

cancer, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS ) and treatment

with chemotherapy.

If olive leaf extract causes micro-organisms ( such as bacteria,

viruses, fungi, parasites and Candida albicans ) to die off rapidly

the body may release toxins causing a " die-off " effect which may

cause some symptoms such as headaches and fatigue.

If this happens reduce dose by half or discontinue the capsules for

3 days.

Olive leaf extract is not just a tool of disease prevention, it also

offers a new safe and effective therapeutic substance in the ongoing

battle against dangerous micro-organisms and chronic infections.

For more acute infections such as swollen glands, cystitis or

feverish conditions it may be necessary to take 3 capsules every six

hours.
