Serotonin Naturally

MessageSSRIs can certainly be dangerous. I know of three people who committed

suicide within three weeks after STOPPING taking Prozac. I knew another man, a

lawyer, who was very vivacious (a result that Prozac as on those who take it --

this person suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder). He stopped the drug

because it caused sexual dysfunction, and a couple of days later, as he sat on

the front row in church, he had a grande mal seizure, which did not cease until

he reached the hospital. Prozac is certainly dangerous when one quits taking

it. It is truly addictive.

I have two other points to make.

1) Serotonin levels in the brain can be raised naturally, allowing the brain to

determine what it needs. Serotonin, incidentally, is properly named

5-hydroxytryptomine, a product of the essential amino acid tryptophan. It is

the neurotransmitter in the brain that, among other things, gives one a sense of

well-being.

In some people, serotonin levels seem to be naturally low, and they feel bad

generally. In others, they become lowered because of alcoholism or some other

chemical cause, and do not recover, again leaving the person feeling bad.

What we want to do in natural medicine is to raise the levels naturally, so that

the person feels good and is not addicted to something, or damaged in some other

way.

There are 5 ways to do this naturally:

a) take tryptophan, which can be purchased at health food stores, or taken by

eating red meat, dark green leafy vegetables, etc. There was once a scandal

related to commercial L- tryptophan, but that was due to a polluted batch. It

is now safe. (L- means levo-.... It means that the molecule rotates to the

left when passed through polarized light [think of it as being left-handed].

The counterpart is D-, such as in D-alpha tocoporal [Vitamin E], and it rotates

to the right.)

b) Take niacinamide, the form of niacin (Vitamin B3 which exists in the brain).

This works since tryptophan is used in the brain not only to make serotonin, but

also to make niacinamide, which it must do first, due to the body's priorities.

Taking niacinamide leaves more tryptophan for the brain to use to make

serotonin.

c) Take Vitamin B-6, pyridoxine, especially with niacinamide. This is because

niacinamide is a large molecule and has trouble crossing the blood-brain

barrier. B-6 is a smaller molecule and passes easily, and it conveniently

selectively transports niacinamide across the barrier (which makes no sense but

still works).

d) Take salicilates, like aspirin, which increase serotonin. They have other

effects, so be careful. Aspirin also, incidentally, prevents repeated dreams,

and tends to prevent sleep paralysis.

e) Fasting raises brain serotonin levels. It also causes weight loss, meaning

that it is the preferred solution for many, many Americans.

My suggestion is for people who feel they have low levels of serotonin (usually

are depressed or have feelings of low self esteem or are obsessive-compulsive)

should, first, eat well, especially those foods rich in tryptophan. Do not

overeat. Fast occasionally, for a meal or for a day or for as long as three

days (not longer). Take niacinamide, for an adult about 1 gram three times a day

with food, and with about the same amount of Vitamin C. (do this gradually, the

first day take only 500 mg, the second day, 1000 mg, the third day, 1500 mg,

etc., up to 3000 per day (3 grams). If you have stomach discomfort or very

odorous feces, stop, wait a week, and try again.

Take B6, but no more than 200 mg. a day (more can cause temporary, reversible

nerve damage, according to the medical profession).

Exercise regularly, both aerobically and anaerobically.

Sex is good, and raises serotonin levels. Do it.

Natural treatment does not work like drugs, and may take a month to have an

effect. Don't give up for at least 3 months. It is gradual, but often works

just as well as drugs, and without the problems. Indeed, comparison tests were

run between three groups -- one taking SSRIs, one in group therapy, one with

aerobic exercise (natural vitamin therapy was not included). All three groups

had the same level of improvements.

Go for it!

3) My third point is that the FDA is truly controlled by the pharmaceutical

companies (PhARMA). Reagan as President stopped all independent government

testing of drugs, and now the drug companies test their own drugs and give the

results to the FDA, which then looks at them and OKs the drug. (Yes, something

is wrong here). The companies are required to give to the FDA any adverse

results, but the FDA is NOT required to release the information to the public.

Now you know why PhARMA gives so much money to politicians. They like it this

way.
