Guest guest
FREE SPEECH DAY OCTOBER 13 AND AMERICA ONLINE On the subject of free speech, I recently received a “warning” email from AOL after I sent a list of website links concerning the truth behind 911 and privacy issues to a few friends. (I sent the same reference to this group September 30, 2004.:The Truth About 911 and Why Americans Should Be Worried and Wake UP-see below for excerpt) Could it be that AOL is spying on its members’ e-mail and trying to censor what they receive? Does AOL have a search engine which scans for certain kinds of content or key words in its members’ email? While this would be no surprise to those of us here who have already learned about the court ruling allowing our email to be read, I find the added step of sending a “warning” coercive. At the same time, the warning is evasive and does not indicate what kind of a warning it is. It brings to mind Fox News and company, seeming politically motivated—who owns AOL, anyway? I lost track. Anyone using AOL who does not have small children or live in the Hicksville where they do not have DSL or cable really needs to question why they are using AOL. AOL adds on all kinds of control and surveillance of your account. For example, Curezone.com noted that AOL will not deliver curezone’s weekly email newsletters. Who knows what else? Plus, it’s a complete hassle going through their system and wastes a lot of time. I say get rid of the horse and buggy and get yourself a fast car—get off dial up altogether. And don’t have an interface such as MSN or AOL. Just set your computer to go to your favorite search engine, such as . Download Mozilla and click onto it as an operating system. I highly encourage everyone to cancel his or her AOL account. If I were any kind of a big shot whose mail might be fun to snoop through, I would definitely not use AOL. Here is what the “warning” stated: This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE. Freeway Free Speech Day: Driving America to Think” October 13, 2004 On October 13th, hundreds of activists nationwide will post signs critical of the Bush Administration on area freeways, reaching millions of voters in states from Maine to California. The Freeway Blogger has posted more than 2000 such signs over the last year. In addition to coordinating activists, we will launch a nationwide media campaign to promote the fact that hundreds (if not thousands) of these signs are going up across America on the same day, and to highlight this newest, and oldest, form of civic dialog. We anticipate wide-spread news coverage about this powerful grassroots effort. The ultimate goal is to increase voter turnout and defeat Bush. We also hope to stimulate the democratic process in the way it was originally intended--with each citizen being able to express their political views directly to their fellow citizen. We are asking for your help in posting signs and recruiting activists, especially in the following states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. If you plan to post freeway banners, please email us to let us know so that we can include your numbers in our media outreach. If possible, please also take a digital photo of your banner and email it to us on October 13th. We will add it to the visitor’s gallery as a resource for reporters and fellow freeway bloggers. Please also read the How To and the frequently asked questions sections to learn how to safely post your message, and for other important information. Last, tell your network of friends and activists to join us. Together, we can drive America to Think again.
