Recent monitoring by scientists around the country has revealed that

Mobile and surrounding areas on the Gulf Coast are a national hot spot

for mercury pollution falling from the sky.

The amount of airborne mercury deposited on Mobile in 2003 was two to

five times greater than the quantity recorded over much of eastern North

America, according to data supplied by the Mercury Deposition Network.

Only one monitor in North America recorded mercury fallout greater than

that recorded near Bay Minette, and that was at a station west of Fort

Lauderdale in the Florida Everglades.
