By Mick Youther n the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, I want to thank President George W. Bush and his administration for everything they have done for America. They have taught us the importance of fair elections—free from judicial interference. They have shown us what it is like to live in a nation where the “king” can declare war, break treaties, imprison foreigners and citizens and try them in secret trials with secret evidence. Thanks to Bush & Co. we now know why the Founding Fathers provided checks and balances on government and why they warned us to guard against every attack on the Constitution. • “Liberty and order will never be completely safe until a trespass on the Constitutional provisions for either, shall be felt with the same keenness that resents and invasion of the dearest rights.”-- James Madison, 4th U.S. President and “Father of the Constitution”, 1792 • " The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government -- lest it come to dominate our lives and interests. " -- Patrick Henry (1736-1799) American Revolutionary • " When all government, domestic and foreign, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated. " -- Thomas Jefferson, 1821 • “In all our associations; in all our agreements let us never lose sight of this fundamental maxim--that all power was originally lodged in, and consequently is derived from, the people. We should wear it as a breastplate, and buckle it on as our armour.”--George Mason (1725-1792), Author of Bill of Rights • “The Constitution is a written instrument. As such, its meaning does not alter. That which it meant when it was adopted, it means now.”-- South Carolina v. United States (1905) • “The Constitution is not neutral. It was designed to take the government off the backs of the people.”-- Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas (1898-1980) • " The greatest [calamity] which could befall [us would be] submission to a government of unlimited powers. " -- Thomas Jefferson, 1825 I do not mean to suggest that Bush & Co. started the assault on the Constitution. There have always been elitists who were willing to undermine the Constitution and govern with deception and manipulation because they believe that they alone know what is best for America. The reason Bush & Co. deserve a special Thank You is because their attack on our Constitution has been so arrogant and so blatant that it can no longer be ignored. No more slow erosion of our liberties—the Bush Administration has given us the slap in the face that we needed to wake us up to what is happening to our America. People who had never protested anything before came out to protest Mr. Bush’s war. People who had never been politically active are getting involved. People all across the naton are starting to take their citizenship seriously. That is the only thing that can save America. • “The most important political office is that of the private citizen.”-- Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis (1856-1941) • “Politics ought to be the part-time profession of every citizen who would protect the rights and privileges of free people and who would preserve what is good and fruitful in our national heritage.”-- Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th U.S. President and Supreme Allied Commander • “It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government.”-- Thomas Paine (1737-1809), American Revolutionary and Author • " It behooves our citizens to be on their guard, to be firm in their principles, and full of confidence in themselves. We are able to preserve our self-government if we will but think so. " -- Thomas Jefferson, 1800 • " We, the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts--not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow men who pervert the Constitution”-- Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. President • " It is not the function of our Government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the Government from falling into error. " -- Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, 1950 • " The true danger is when liberty is nibbled away, for expedients, and by parts ... the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. " -- Edmund Burke (1729-1797), Member of Parliament, Philosopher, and Author
