Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform

Luna the wayward orca will be fed only wild salmon if he is captured

Vancouver Sun - Wednesday, June 30, 2004

GOLD RIVER - B.C.'s salmon-farming industry has been done out of what could

be one very hungry customer.

Luna, the wayward orca, is said to eat as much as 160 kilograms of salmon a

day. But when and if Gold River's most famous resident is captured and

relocated to Pedder Bay in southern Vancouver Island, his diet will consist

of wild salmon only.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) spokeswoman Lara Sloan confirmed

Wednesday that a scientific panel has decided to feed Luna an exclusive diet

of wild salmon, because that is what he eats in the wild.

" It was brought up in the scientific panel meetings, and it was determined

he would be fed wild salmon only, " Sloan said.

She could not say, however, if it also was determined that feeding Luna

farmed salmon would make him sick.

" I hadn't heard that, " Sloan said.

Anti-farming groups welcomed the news as yet another opportunity to

criticize the industry.

" I think it's very interesting that DFO would feed Luna only wild salmon, "

said Raincoast Conservation Society executive director Chris Genovali.

Obviously, they have concerns that farmed salmon isn't part of his natural

diet and could possibly have some sort of detrimental effect. "

For many years, First Nations, fishermen, and the conservation community

have led efforts in British Columbia to develop a salmon farming industry

that is safe for humans and the environment. However, industry has staunchly

resisted change, putting human and ocean health at risk. Now, with industry

planning to double the number of harmful fish farms on the coast of BC,

groups working to promote safe farming have joined together to create the

Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform (CAAR). Working in partnership, we

believe we can contribute to a healthy and sustainable coast.

Mission Statement

To protect wild salmon, coastal ecosystems, coastal communities and human

health from destructive fish farming practices

CAAR Goals

To encourage the fish farming industry to:

Develop technology that eliminates the risk of disease transfer to wild fish

and escapes of farmed salmon into the wild;

Guarantee fish farm waste is not released into the ocean;

Label all farmed fish so consumers can make informed choices;

Develop fish feed that does not deplete global fish stocks;

Ensure that wildlife is not harmed as a result of fish farming;

Prohibit the use of genetically modified fish;

Eliminate the use of antibiotics, biocides and harmful chemicals in fish

farming;

Ensure contaminants in farmed fish do not exceed safe levels;

Respect the views of coastal residents by not locating farms where First

Nations or other local communities object.
