There's Still Time: Stop Durbin Amendment to Defense Bill On late Monday or Tuesday of next week, the Senate will vote on amendments to a Department of Defense funding bill, S. 2400. Included in these amendments is one introduced today by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) that will restrict access to certain dietary supplements on military bases and place reporting requirements on manufacturers that are stricter than those for over-the-counter drugs. We oppose this amendment and ask that you tell your Senators to oppose it, too. A better approach to Sen. Durbin's amendment is a substitute amendment being introduced on Monday or Tuesday of next week by Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). This amendment will help ensure that the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the law that governs supplements, is fully implemented and enforced. It also directs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop an appropriate system for the reporting of serious adverse reactions to dietary supplements. Urge your Senators to support this fair and comprehensive amendment that will benefit all Americans. Sens. Harkin and Hatch recognize that DSHEA is a good law that protects American consumers when the FDA does its job. Tell your Senators today to vote " No " on Sen. Durbin's Senate Amendment 3225 to the Department of Defense Authorization Bill and vote " Yes " on the substitute amendment from Sens. Harkin and Hatch. Take action now! Click here to send a free e-mail or fax to let your Senators know that you support the amendment from Sens. Harkin and Hatch as a substitute for Sen. Durbin's amendment. -- NNFA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization representing retailers and suppliers of natural and nutritional products. http://www.nnfa.org/aboutnnfa Visit NNFA's Advocacy Action Center to learn more about legislative activities that affect those who buy, sell and consume natural and nutritional products, like organic foods and dietary supplements.
