Guest guest
I love the Atkins Diet. I have been on it for 3 months and lost 34 pounds. Be sure to follow directions and be sure to take supplements and dietary fiber as suggested. The induction phase gets it started so good luck and keep use posted. Guest guest
My wife is impressed by what she's read about it. Does anyone have any advice/information about the efficacy/safety of following this diet? Has anyone tried it with success? She has read about people who have been on it for as much as 1.5 years and who have lost significant weight. Her thinking is that she knows how to eat healthfully now, so if she did lose significant weight, she would not gain it back. Any thoughts/opinions/experiences would be much appreciated! Thanks. Guest guest
Have you tried it? What in the world is it supposed to be? My wife is looking to lose weight and be healthier, not to win the " Ms. Universe " contest. I have a very hard time with sites that are all hype, no facts, and on which the person pushing the diet is an anomaly such that he represents .01% of all 56-year-old Americans. My wife will settle for something that looks attainable, not whatever it is that guy is pushing. Thanks, Elliot
Guest guest
Linda, I went to that link, but I saw something about an actress who writing her first novel and who has two children. Why does that relate to the Atkins diet, or to any diet? Just posting " How about this? " or " How about that? " is uninformative and confusing. Guest guest
Elliot I lost approx 18kg (40lb) between March-Dec 2000 on the Atkins Diet. I wrote a book about the diet and kept data along the way, incl blood tests etc. I was sceptical to start with but proved to myself that it works. I have never put it back on. It made a lot of sense to me especialy after reading those 2 books I mentioned earlier. They all link in. The book was for my family and my own enjoyment but if you are interested maybe I can send it to you online. Let me know if you are interested. Guest guest
I am now doing a low carb diet myself. I am not following atkins though. I am eating plenty of vegetables, meat, some cheese and nuts.Atkins does work, I just need more vegetables than what he allows. I have cut out most fruit corn and potatoes for now, but will add much more fruit back to my diet as time goes on. Eventually I will be eating all fruit, vegetables, meat , nuts and some dairy. I will always stay away from sugar, processed foods, white flour , white rice, etc. Kim

Guest guest
Thanks, Kimberly! Most encouraging! Another member sent me reams of information and links that appeared to show that the Atkins diet is quite dangerous. But it seems there are some astute people on this board who have had real success with it! Elliot , Kimberly McDonald <kmcdonald03@s...> wrote: > I am now doing a low carb diet myself. Guest guest
Elliot, The Atkins diet is about much much more than weight loss. Atkins was an MD, he prescribed pharmaceutical medications for many problems. But he also treated many other health issues with diet and supplements including high cholesteral problems, diabetes II, hypertension, the psychiatric problems including depression, anxiety, sleep problems, etc. In other words - those problems which the pharmaceutical industry has made its greatest profits from the last couple of decades. He also made great challenges to the food industry and their profits. Carbohydrates are the cheapest foods to produce and the most profitable. The sugar industry is quite powerful, it's politics go back to the beginning of the US. There is needless to say, quite a bit of research substantiating the need for the prescription meds and the dangers of a diet such as Atkins. Atkins was a tremendous threat to many, much effort was placed to label him as quack, even try to get him out of practicing medicine. (I think his being the doctor the establishment found most threatening and most loved to hate speaks loudly to his credit.) But the epidemic in diabetes (obesity) and all the money poured into studying it as well as the significant advances in neurosciences, onocology etc, have bought many scientists (those not owned by pharmacia) back around to agreeing with Atkins. Now, there are essentially two sides of the fence in allopathic medicine. There are scientists now saying that diabetes II is as Atkin stated, diet induced from overconsumption of carbohydrates and more impressive, it is the mother of the major serious diseases plaguing us currently including heart disease, many cancers, psychiatric problems, etc. At Harvard, Stanford, the Mayo Clinic, you will find doctors treating some neurological problems such as epilepsy, autism, mongolism, with ketogenic diets (which Atkin's is). You will find some now treating diabetic patients, stroke patients, heart patients, cancer patients with low carb diets. The following article was published in the New York Times two years ago and explains the radical change in allopathic medicine that has been occurring. http://www.mercola.com/2002/jul/24/carbs1.htm You will find studies substantiating BOTH sides. You are going to have to decide who you want to believe when it comes to the diet being dangerous to do - or to not do. I did the same thing by switching from a mostly whole grain and bean based diet to mostly veggies (large percentage raw), some meat, and a tiny fraction the grain and beans I used to eat (with zero refined carbs and potatoes). I lost ten pounds the first month, five pounds the second month, and another ten pounds over the course of several more months. I actually lost a little too much weight and ended up putting five pounds back on over the past month. Getting off the hypoglycemic rollercoaster has been an amazing, transformational experience. From what I gather, this veggie/meat based diet is more like the South Beach Diet than Atkins. Alex
Guest guest
There is a reason for all the negative hype on the Atkins diet. If you read his book, or do some research you'll find out that A LOT of research was done on low-carb dieting back in the 70's proving that it works far better than low-fat dieting. That research also proved that low-fat dieting is NOT good for you, as we all need some fat in our diets to remain healthy. The fact is, is that the medical and low-fat industries are fighting back at the low-carb diet industy because they are afraid that the TRUTH will come out. You can find some of this research in Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I'm sure with some effort you might find the research studies online, but I'd suspect that they'll be rather hidden. I'll have a look and get back to you. Gaia > " Another member sent me reams of information and links that appeared >to show that the Atkins diet is quite dangerous. Guest guest
It seems, that " either-or " thinking is rampant on this list. In fact, the evidence supporting a " low-fat, " or a " low carbohydrate " diet, is poor. The more carefully you examine the evidence, the less reliable it appears. The question with fat, is not whether you ought to consume it at all; and, it's the same with carbohydrates. The questions are, " how much fat, and which fats, " you ought to consume. The same applies to carbohydrates: how much, and which carbohydrate foods should I consume. The best diet, it seems to me, is one that encourages us to consume " conservative " amounts of the " best " fats and carbohydrates. This means a reduced appetite, with weight reduction, less problems for the digestive tract, and, most importantly, a focus on those foods that are nutritonally dense.
