It is also common in Eastern countries, but the incidence of fatal, metastatic prostate cancer is much lower there. This suggests that some dietary or environmental factor is involved in determining whether prostate cancer spreads to other organs or not. Researchers at the University of Virginia Cancer Center believe they have uncovered an important clue to the puzzle. Their experiments have shown that arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid mainly found in meat and animal products, stimulates the growth of prostate cancer cells through the production of a metabolite, 5-HETE (5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid). The researchers found that 5-HETE is essential for the survival of prostate cancer cells and that these cells are completely eradicated (in vitro) in a few hours by blocking the production of 5-HETE. They conclude that a high intake of dietary fats accelerates the progression of prostate cancer and that arachidonic acid is intimately involved in this process. They also suggest that drugs which inhibit the formation of 5-HETE may prove useful in the battle against prostate cancer. Ghosh, Jagadananda and Myers, Charles E. What kind is good, what kind is bad, what might prevent localized disease, what might prevent metastasis. It is all here in this December 1998 Prostate Forum Newsletter. Is PGE-2, 5 HETE, 12 HETE good for you and where does it come from. Listed below is the Key points of this excellent issue. It will be quoted many times in the future. You will have to call their office for copies. I think this is an important issue for those wondering about the effects of fat on prostate cancer. -- Prostate Forum P.O. KEY POINTS * Fat is composed of a glycerin backbone with three fatty acids attached. The different fatty acids make one fat different from another. * It is uncommon for an adult to become deficient in essential fatty acids. I think most Americans suffer from excessive amounts of " essential fatty acids " in their diets. * Unsaturated fats fall into three major groups, omega 3, omega 6 or omega 9. * Arachidonic acid, an omega 6 fatty acid, is converted into a number of hormones with negative effects on prostate cancer cells. * Most of the arachidonic acid in [a OUr diet comes from meat, dairy t, and egg yolks. * Prostaglandin E2 is one product made from arachidonic acid. It can disable or kill immune cells important in controlling cancer. * Arachidonic acid can be converted into 12-HETE, a hormone which stimulates cancer cell invasion and new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). * Arachidonic acid can be converted into 5-HETE, a hormone which can promote the survival and growth of prostate cancer cells. * Saw palmetto, pygeum africanum, PC-SPES, and other herbs can block arachidonic acid conversion to these hormones. Fat and Prostate Cancer In past issues of this newsletter we have presented evidence that a diet rich in fat, especially animal fat, increases the risk of prostate cancer. We reviewed the information suggesting that fat may also be dangerous to men already diagnosed with prostate cancer. Over the past two years, there have been dramatic advances in our understanding of how dietary fat promotes the development of prostate cancer. Components of dietary fat have been shown to stimulate the spread and growth of human prostate cancer. As cancers grow, they need to form new blood vessels to supply added food and oxygen. A component of fat can dramatically enhance new blood vessel formation by prostate cancer cells. The immune response to cancer involves both natural killer cells and T cells that are also able to kill cancer cells. Prostate cancer cells can use dietary fat to produce chemicals capable of killing or disabling both of these immune cells. In summary, certain dietary fats allow the cancer cells to grow and survive, evade the immune sys tern, and spread to distant parts o£ the body _________________ JoAnn Guest mrsjoguest DietaryTipsForHBP http://www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest The complete " Whole Body " Health line consists of the " AIM GARDEN TRIO " Ask About Health Professional Support Series: AIM Barleygreen " Wisdom of the Past, Food of the Future " http://www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/AIM.html PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER We have made every effort to ensure that the information included in these pages is accurate.
