Over three million visits each year to North American physicians are for infertility. The demand for treatment is increasing and the cost, both financial and emotional, can severely strain relationships. Infertility is defined as the absence of conception after one year of regular intercourse without the use of any contraceptive. About fifteen percent of all couples experience conception problems. Men are responsible for the problem at least forty percent of the time. Infertility increases in women over the age of thirty-five. Causes ============== It can be hard to pinpoint which of the many possible factors is the cause of a couple's infertility. For both men and women there can be several factors, such as physical changes in the pelvis due to inflammation and infection, chlamydia, excessive physical activity, malnutrition, extreme weight gain or loss, severe mental or physical stress, and exposure to toxic substances including heavy metals, drugs, radiation and heavy smoking. Women with a previous history of pelvic inflammatory disease, pregnancy outside the uterus, abdominal surgery, intra-uterine device (IUD) complications or fibroids are often unable to conceive. In some cases, women develop an incompatibility with or allergy to the partner's sperm, which are destroyed as a result of immune system malfunction. Other causes of infertility in women could be failure to ovulate, tubal disease, endometriosis, pituitary gland failure, ovarian failure, long-term effects of the birth control pill, hypothyroidism or other hormonal imbalances, endometrial failure, hostile cervical mucus, recurrent miscarriages and nutritional deficiencies. In men, infertility can be caused by an inadequate sperm production by the testes or poor sperm motility. This may be due to environmental toxins such as chemicals, radiation, drugs, heavy-metal exposure, cigarette smoking, street drug use and pollution. Frequent sex, prolonged exposure to heat from hot tubs or saunas, or wearing underwear or pants that are too tight are also suspects. Studies show that sperm counts have declined steadily over the past fifty years. During this period of time, our civilization has experienced the introduction of over 70,000 chemicals in our food, water and air. Stress, poor diet and lifestyle habits all contribute to low sperm counts or poor sperm motility. Other causes in men include a varicose condition of the scrotum, undescended testes, infectious disease and glandular diseases affecting the hypothalamus, pituitary and the testes. Nutrient deficiencies also have a role to play. An obstruction of the seminal tract will decrease or stop the passage of sperm from the testes to the urethra for ejaculation. This may result from congenital abnormalities, urethral stricture and infection of the epidydimis, testes, seminal vesicles, urethra, prostate or vas. All are correctable medical conditions. Nutrition ============== A balanced diet is essential for the body to function properly. Eat pumpkin seeds for zinc, which is important for the health of reproductive organs and the prostate gland. Bee pollen and royal jelly are extremely nutrient-rich bee product foods which help stimulate fertility. Both men and women should avoid coffee, tea and colas since caffeine promotes infertility. In the case of hormone deficiency, vitamin E is the fertility vitamin because it corrects the functioning of the endocrine glands. Green, leafy vegetables, especially watercress, contain vitamin E. Drink one tablespoon of watercress juice daily or add a few fresh sprigs to a salad. Wheat germ is an excellent source of vitamin E. In certain cases miscarriage can be prevented if the pregnant woman eats wheat germ on a regular basis. Nutritional Supplements ============================ Supplements help improve fertility. Lack of protein and calories from malnourishment is a cause of infertility, so adequate nutrition should be the basis for treatment of any illness, including infertility. Vitamin B6 given for six months or more can make a marked difference in some women having problems conceiving, as this vitamin helps balance progesterone levels. The other B vitamins are best taken together to prevent imbalances from occurring. Men also benefit from these supplements as they are required for thousands of enzyme reactions. Vitamin E is useful for hormonal imbalances and is a vital nutrient for the sex hormones. Often recommended for women to help with a wide variety of reproductive problems, this vitamin is also needed by men to provide a healthy sperm count. For women, an overgrowth of unfriendly or pathogenic bacteria, candida, fungi or parasites may lead to bloating, gas, alternating *diarrhea with *constipation, and bad breath. Most gynecological infections with resulting infertility stem from microbes that have crept into the vagina or uterus from the anus. Stool cultures for these potential problems may help make the diagnosis and treatment could then be aimed at balancing the large bowel flora with supplements like Lactobacillus acidophilus. The supplements most important in enhancing fertility in men are vitamin C, zinc and L-arginine. Vitamin C helps prevent sperm from clumping or sticking together, thus improving the chances for fertility. Zinc increases both sperm count and sperm motility. Found in high amounts in the head of the sperm, L-arginine also improves sperm count and motility. L-arginine also improves sexual desire and ejaculation. Essential fatty acids, chromium, selenium, copper, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and vitamin B complex are also useful. Since sperm formation takes almost three months, it will take at least this amount of time before reaping the benefits of a nutrient supplementation program. Daily dosages: Most Important: Vitamin B complex, 100 mg twice daily Vitamin B6, 50 mg twice daily for six months or more Vitamin E, with mixed tocopherols, 800 IU Vitamin C, with bioflavonoids, 1,000-3,000 mg three times daily for at least three months Zinc, 60 mg, with 3 mg copper daily six months, then reduce zinc to 30 mg L-arginine, 4,000 mg Coenzyme Q10, 200 mg Chromium, 100 mcg Selenium, 70 mcg Helpful: Lactobacillus acidophilus, 1-3 capsules or 1 tsp. Herbal Remedies ================== Several herbs effectively stimulate hormones necessary to fertility. Stinging nettle seeds contain estrogen-like phytohormones. Drink 3 cups of tea daily or add 1 tsp. of seeds to every meal. Prepare tea by adding 1 handful of seeds to 1 qt. of boiling water. Red clover blossoms help restore and balance hormonal functions and nourish the uterus. The calcium and magnesium in the plant relax the nervous system and improve fertility. Red clover also balances the acid-alkaline level of the vagina which promotes conception. Combine with peppermint for flavor and sexual stimulation. Add 1 oz. of red clover blossoms and 1 tsp. of peppermint leaves to 1 qt. of boiling water. Steep for four hours. Strain and drink throughout the day for several months at a time. Wild raspberry leaf tea is an effective uterine tonic and contains a large amount of calcium. Drink 1 cup three times daily. Dong quai root is regarded as a fertility promoter, and is found in Tang Kwei Gin, sold in Chinese stores. Take 2 capsules twice daily on the days between ovulation and menstruation only, for best results. If Tang Kwei Gin is not available, take the dong quai in combination with the above herbs. Lady's mantle strengthens the uterus lining, heals wounds and protects the mucous membranes. It inhibits spasms and regulates blood flow. Drink 10-15 drops of tincture in water three times daily. St. John's wort blossom tea improves mood, calms, heals wounds and works as a nerve tonic. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 tsp. of blossoms, steep for five minutes, strain and drink. External/Physical Therapies ================================ The inability to conceive is often connected with a hormone deficiency that can be improved by stimulating the body to produce its own hormones. Try hydrotherapy, sitz-baths or alternating hot-and-cold baths. Stimulation of the circulatory system will boost the supply of blood to the abdomen. This will also increase the production of hormones and eventually improve chances of pregnancy. Outdoor exercise and breathing deeply in the open air are necessary for the natural regeneration of the body, but overexertion should be avoided. Reflexology For male infertility, work the reflexes of the testes and prostate, the entire spine and endocrine glands, as illustrated. For female infertility, work the reflexes of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, spine and all glands, as illustrated. Other Suggestions ====================== A hair analysis test will determine toxic levels of lead which can interfere with fertility and cause impotence. (For more information, see Appendix 1.) Chelation therapy detects heavy metals which interfere with fertility. (For more information, see Appendix 1.)
Guest guest
Hey, Fabiola! There was a news story on T.V., about the use of acupuncture to increase fertility and probability of conception. Perhaps you have a doctor of T.C.M. (traditional Chinese medicine) in your area. I know their herbal pharmacy includes substances which are related to hormones. Black boned chicken extract is one used by women who want to increase their estrogen levels. Deer antler works for men, and guys--you can recall those embarassing moments of your teen years. I expect there's help for you.
