Guest guest
Question on the weight gain. If a person has a thryoid problem and takes synthroid.. Every time they gain 10 lbs, back to the Dr. and sure enough needs the meds increased. Well.. if they finally get smart and go to a natural Dr. and get on the right supplements. Will the extra 80 lbs of weight they gained over the last 10 years come off? No diet has ever worked and they only time they gain weight is when the thryoid is off. This silly person is me and I am just starting into 'alternative' stuff to help my daughter. Maybe it might help me too? Hope someone knows the answer. Guest guest
Let us know how it goes. It will be interesting, and beneficial, if you see results in treating your thyroid naturally. I am seriously overweight. I started eating soy about six weeks ago and gained about six pounds. I went off gluten a year ago and lost 20 pounds. I discovered that the gluten was causing me to be ravenously hungry. In fact, I did not experience normal hunger until I was off the gluten awhile. What a difference. I may be on a tangent here re the post topic, but identifying a gluten intolerance made a big difference in my life. I am also less sluggish (even with the postsurgery fatigue problem) and no longer have an aversion to fruit. It was messing up something! It is interesting that your weight gains always corresponded with thyroid function. I'll watch how it goes over the coming months for myself to re thyroid function vs. weight. Guest guest
Synthroid is a synthetic drug and not everyone does well on it. If your TSH is out of range, you may have no option but to take medication. But there are " natural " medications, such as Armour, Naturthroid, Westroid - which many people report work better (especially for regulating your weight). Your thyroid controls your metabolism - even weight lifters know this and sometimes they use thyroid medication to lose weight. It's a tricky balance. There's nothing more frustrating for thyroid sufferers than the constant weight gain. Many people with thyroid problems (espcially autoimmune) have problems digesting glutens. Have you been tested for celiac disease?. I was and tested negative but I went ahead and eliminated glutens from my diet and it made a world of difference in my symptoms. Many find the low-carb diets work well with thyroid problems. There are various studies that show that the thyroid changes the bodies responses to carbs. I just started the Mercola's No Grain Diet (http://www.mercola.com/nograindiet/index.shtml ) and find I'm losing weight with it. You may want to pick up his book - he has a whole section on the thyroid. Again - it's getting away from the glutens and grains that seems to help. Another " diet book " I like is FatWars (http://www.fatwars.com/CA/ ). He also addresses the thyroid and makes many supplements recommendations. There's a real need for a protein/carb balance when you have a thyroid problem. I am not a fan of diet books or diet fads - but I have found these two books are very " thyroid friendly " and they both recommend natural foods and supplements. I don't use thyroid medication and I'm doing the more alterative route. The diet changes I made was to get off of glutens (and now all grains), diary, stimulants (coffee, alcohol)and all processed foods. Supplements that are usually recommended with thyroid problems: the B vitamins and A vitamins (less absorbed with thyroid problems); L-tyrosine, Ashwagandha, Omega oils, Vit C (not over 3,000 grams with thyroid problems), Biotin, zinc, copper... Hope that helps!. There are forums in that specifically talk about thyroid and metabolism problems.
