Guest guest
" XanGo spokesperson, about the supposed anti-cancer effect of Xango: " It's incredible. " What, really, does such a comment mean, and what does it signify about the person making it? Every time I hear the the word " incredible " it reminds me of how mentally lazy many people have become, and of the sad fact that most people no longer know how to, or even desire to, think for themselves. For too many people, real, critical thinking is painful. For them it is much easier to leave the thinking to someone else. They refer to anything that appears to them too difficult to think about as " incredible. " " Incredible " is also one of the few four- syllable words they can pronounce, and for which they think they know the meaning. In fact, the word " incredible " does not mean " fantastic " or " marvelous " or " amazing " or " tremendously exciting " or " remarkable " or " stupendous " or " miraculous " or " sensational " or even " awesome. " It means " not to be believed, " and therefore should be used far less often than one hears it in daily conversation and in the media. Proper usage of the word would be something like, " I find your argument incredible, " meaning, " I do not believe you. " The second most incorrectly and over-used word I hear is " impact. " That word does not mean " to influence, " " to affect " or " to change. " Impact is a noun or an adjective, not a verb. It means either " a sharp blow or serious collision, " or " tightly wedged. " Proper usage would be " The impact of the asteroid striking the surface of the planet was immense. " or " I had my impacted wisdom teeth pulled today. " Take, for instance, an advertising slogan such as, " Impact your world! " It sounds powerful, but unless one has been shot from a catapult or a cannon, one will not " impact " one's world. One may possibly affect it, influence it or change it, but one does not " impact " it, and one will be better off not doing so, as it would likely result in death. In fact, another way to " impact your world " would be to jump from an airplane without a parachute. Sadly, the incessant babbling of the words " incredible " and " impact " are indicative of the tendency of this world to turn into a place made up of masses of unthinking and powerless people ruled by a few who amass power for selfish reasons and whose thinking concerns only themselves.
