My blood tests always come back with a low red blood cell count, does

anyone know what that means?

Hi Julie,

A low RBC usually indicates a degree of anemia and your blood pressure

is probably a bit low too. Its importance depends why the count was

taken, and if you have any underlying condition that you know of. In

the main, it is something that can be put right by eating foods with

more iron. I rarely eat red meat, so I'm always a shade low with my RBC

and blood pressure. My BP is usually a notch or two below 120, and I'm

pleased with that. I do eat lots of iron containing vegetables like

cress, rocket, spinach, kale and so on.

There may be another reason for low red cell count which may need to be

checked. RBCs are made in your sternum and other parts of red bone.

Sometimes there's a clinical reason for low hemoglobin manufacture

which may not be due to diet alone, so I'd wait for your physician to

come back to you if its necessary. If your GP isn't overly concerned it

probably can be fixed with diet. I once got put on strong iron pills by

my well meaning doctor (before I was aware that diet could fix the

problem) and had horrendous constipation for weeks! I did some research

and switched to more leafy foods.

Try this page for blood count info:
