Omega-3 fish oils even prevent sudden death among dogs subjected to intentional heart spasm in lab experiments. The fortification of food with omega-3 oils could save millions of American lives but US health authorities fail to establish a daily requirement for this essential nutrient. Guest guest
Hi Frank, This is exactly the problem with essential fatty acids. It's extremely difficult to reach a so called " Recommended Daily Intake " because of the many influences over its metabolism. Saturated fats, glucagons, trans fats and alcohol all inhibit EFA metabolism. B6, Magnesium and Zinc deficiencies can also inhibit metabolism as well as excessive Omega-6's consumption. Because of these many influences over fat metabolism, a broadly defined requirement will be of little benefit to the user. In our research we are trying to establish intake parameters along with the intake amounts. We are using EFA testing from Great Smokies together with food journals analyzed by the KIM software (free from national institute of health). If a person is able to achieve a vegan diet, then it becomes a reasonably simple matter to get control over the omegas - but for the majority of Americans it remains a slippery slop. I wish that the scientific community would create an inexpensive EFA test so that people could get those tests done without spending 165 bucks each time.
