TEENS ON MEDS: AT RISK?

There are many brands of antidepressant drugs on the market today,

but none of them have been approved for kids under the age of 18. Yet

doctors have prescribed these drugs to more than 2 million kids in

this year alone. Today we'll hear about some bad experiences teens

have had while taking these prescription drugs. We'll meet one young

man who held one of his high school classes hostage with a rifle

after he increased the dosage of his prescription. Although he can't

remember that event, he was convicted by the court of law for his

actions and has had to move to another town. In another story, we'll

hear from a mother whose 14 year-old son took his life after he was

prescribed antidepressants to help him deal with some mood swings he

was having. We'll also hear from a girl who was prescribed

antidepressants by a new doctor for the migraine headaches she gets.

Unaware that the drugs that were given to her were not for migraines,

she began experiencing a wide range of side effects from jittering to

constant thoughts of suicide.

Luckily, her mom realized what was happening and slowly took her off

the drug. Today, we'll also meet a woman who was carefully prescribed

antidepressants to help her overcome the severe depression that

controlled her life. Find out what you need to know about these

powerful drugs before you make a decision regarding your children's

health.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS - ARE THEY THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR TEEN?

This Thursday's show about prescription medication features two

authors whose viewpoints are invaluable to anyone who wants to learn

more about the symptoms and treatment of depression. Dr. Joseph

Glenmullen's book, Prozac Backlash: Overcoming the Dangers of Prozac,

Zoloft, Paxil, and Other Antidepressants with Safe, Effective

Alternatives is a thorough guide to anyone who is considering taking

an antidepressant drug in order to fight depression. The title of his

book, " Prozac Backlash " refers to the reaction a person's brain has

to the popular antidepressant drug, Prozac, and others like it. Dr.

Glenmullen states that these drugs (which increases the amount

of serotonin in the brain) can cause a wide range of damaging side

effects including permanent facial tics, sexual dysfunction, drug

dependency, memory problems, and sudden feelings of suicide and

violence. In his book, Dr. Glenmullen reviews these side effects in

detail, gives suggestions on other ways to treat depression with and

without these types of drugs, and defines the illness known as

depression by sharing heartrending stories of patients fighting

depression. Glennmullen is not only a psychiatrist with a private

practice, but is also an instructor at the Harvard Medical school and

a member of the staff of Harvard University Health Services. For more

information on his book, log onto: www.prozacbacklash.com
