Herpes: Enhance your Immune-System

Beta-glucans-

appear to indirectly intensify the immune system's ability to fight off

infection, apparently by activating certain white blood

cells called macrophages.

This has been verified in numerous laboratory tests. The activated macrophages

is a veritable powerhouse in terms of activity.

Not only can a macrophage recognize and kill tumor cells

non-specifically, as well as removing foreign debris, but it can

produce a number of essential cytokines that are able to stimulate the

immune system in general and boost bone marrow production.

Look for good food sources (such as oatmeal) because you'll need high

levels of beta-glucans (3,000-15,000 mg a day)

to be effective.

Capsules (500-1,000 mg) are not meant to provide such high doses.

Beta-glucans are a form of natural soluble dietary fiber found in certain

foods including grains ( barley, oats) and mushrooms

( maitake, reishi, and shiitake).

Interestingly, one of the richest concentrated sources of beta-glucans

is found in the cell walls of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisae).

Regardless of the source, however, all beta-glucans are carbohydrates

formed by a string of glucose molecules. Dr. Myra Patchen discovered

that beta-glucan is an effective free radical 'scavenger'.

When beta-1,3-glucan was added to the regime in animals challenged with

different bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae,

Escherichia coli and others) and viral (Herpes virus) pathogens,

a reduced amount of " antivirals " was needed to cope with the infection.

Beta glucans has an antifungal effect as is shown in experiments with Candida

albicans. Such a broad anti-infective spectrum of beta-glucan can be

explained only by the fact that the immunostimulation produced by this

unique component is non-specific.

Hyssop

contains ursolic acid, which reduces inflammation. Studies also

show it to be an antiviral that is especially effective against

the herpes simplex virus.

Garlic

As civilization advanced (if that is the correct term), garlic was sure

to be part of any herbal or medicinal record, from Egypt to China. Most

naturopaths

in Germany prescribe garlic remedies for herpes rashes.

Echinacea

Consider the following case report from the British Journal of Phytotherapy:

After suffering for 12 years with recurrent genital herpes, a man took

echinacea. He found that if he took it within an hour or two after he

noticed the initial tingling, he had far less pain and the outbreak

stopped.

Herbalists generally recommend taking echinacea in a tincture. Add about a

half-teaspoon of the tincture to tea or unpasteurized juice and take it three

times a day.

Now back to the anti-herpes herbal lineup.

Here are the leaders of the

Virus- fighting pack.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis).

Also known as melissa, lemon balms demonstrated antiviral, anti-herpes

properties seem to result from compounds in the herb, including tannins, that

are known as polyphenols.

Here's how these compounds work to tame herpes outbreaks.

The body's cells have receptors that viruses latch on to when they're

trying to take over the cells. The polyphenol compounds have the

ability to latch on to the cells' viral receptor sites.

They take up those spaces and prevent the viruses from attaching to the cell,

thus preventing the spread of infection.

Sarsparilla

The best quality sarsaparilla is Jamaican. Honduran and Mexican are

also very good. Sarsaparilla is excellent for venereal diseases such as

gonorrhea, syphilis and herpes.

Zinc

Because zinc releases Zn2+ ions at physiological pH which are

antiviral to several herpes simplex viruses, and in addition Zn2+ ions also may

be antiviral to the Epstein Barr virus, another member of the herpes family.

Olive leaf extract

Among the many phytochemicals that have interested me is oleuropein (pronounced

oh-lee-or-oh-pin), a substance found in the olive leaf.

This natural supplement of olive leaf extract contains substantial medicinal

benefits.Among them, boosting the energy among patients and aiding in the

treatment of herpes and numerous other viral conditions.

In the U.S.A. the use of olive leaf extract has become very popular

with naturopaths where it is being

prescribed for the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

CFS is associated with immune dysfunction, which allows infections

with a variety of opportunistic microbes from

herpes-viruses,retroviruses, and parasites.

Many sufferers will have an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans,

along with a chronic active infection with the Epstein-Barr Virus ( EBV

or glandular fever ). By the end of early adulthood almost everyone

has detectable levels of

EBV anti-bodies in their blood, meaning that they have at some stage,

been invaded by this virus. In those with a healthy immune system the virus is

kept in a dormant or latent state and does not produce any symptoms.

If the host's immune system becomes weakened or overloaded over time the

glandular fever virus (Epstein-Barr Virus-EBV) begins to reactivate and

cause disease.

EBV belongs to the " herpes " family of viruses, and all herpes viruses

tend to reactivate in those with compromised immune systems such as in

cancer, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS )

and treatment with chemotherapy.

Indeed olive leaf extract has been found to kill ALL the viruses it was

tested against in laboratory tests and so is worthwhile in those with any

chronic

viral infection that is not responding to conventional therapies.

Healing beverages.

Tea and the unpasteurized juices of apple, cranberry, grape, pear,

prune and strawberry all help to kill the herpes virus. Tannins are usually the

active components in these juices.

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)

Rich in organic tannins, this herb has antifungal and astringent properties

which predispose its use for parasitic infections and other skin eruptions.

Applications: Candida albicans (yeast infections), herpes, and tuberculosis.

Pear juice, which is rich in anti-herpes caffeic acid actually may be your very

best juice choice.
