Question about probiotic acidophilus

Hope someone can answer my question. I bought my husband some probiotic acidophilus in a small gel type capsule. He usually takes Mylanta or Pepto for upset stomach. (not good, I know)He has trouble swallowing any kind of pills. What I need to know is if I puncture the gelcap and put the oil in his food would it work as well. Anyone? Thanks, Barb

Why does he get an upset stomach, is it after particular foods? Probiotics are really for the intestines and not the stomach, perhaps he might find that slippery elm bark would soothe his stomach safely or perhaps he could change his diet? If you have any Lemon Balm (Melissa) that is also soothing for the stomach

Barb, you're right; suppressing stomach acid does the body

grievous harm. If your husband has stomach issues, increasing

stomach acid, not reducing it, is more likely to be the answer.

See: hypochlorhydria.

Acidophilus, contrary to belief, is not a very good probiotic.

Lactic acid bacteria AND pathogens are naturally elevated in the

elderly gut, which shows the inadequacy of lactobacilli species

as a probiotic. But, when bifidobacteria, the main probiotic,

changes even a little, it effects large changes in bowel ecology.

A fairly complete education on probiotics and prebiotics, about a

week's worth of reading, is on my website. You can find it in a

search on " inulin references " Duncan Crow
